I'm currently crushing on the ESP F-4E. I'm a new player and I want a neck thru so I can keep my current bass tuned down for B and C metal stuff and have a second bass for the lighter stuff. Any reason to shy away from the ESP? I love funky body styles, indifferent on the natural wood. I wish some of the neck thru's I've seen would come in different finishes but I like the natural look too. What do you guys recommend? I am also looking to upgrade the EMGhz's in my SRA300 if anyone has some input on that.

$400-600 Neck Thru's

The Washburn T24NMK is around $500. I have a T-25 (the 5 string version) that I highly recommend. I can't believe how good it plays for the price. A great bass.
A used Carvin should be the first...and probably only...place to look. Why bother with some cheap overseas stuff when you can get a fantastic quality USA bass?
I surf ebay and criagslist a ton. If i saw a Carvin in the price range I would surely snatch one up. I just joined this forum recently so I've started watching classifieds on here. but to be honest I like to find deals on craigslsit from people either impatient or unaware of the value of their product. I bought my Ibanez SRA300 for 80 almost new condition, same day bought a Peavey Minx 110 for 80 in great condition, just picked up a BP90 slightly used still had the plastic on the screen and in the box for 20. It's hard to catch a steal of a deal in a place where everyone knows the monetary value and then have placed their own emotional value on their stuff.
The Schecter Stiletto Studio is neck thru and looks pretty cool. Active bass too.
Also the Peavey Grind. (be warned, the new ones are so freakin' heavy - I have the older 5 string version and it's reasonable in weight). Passive bass.

Personally, Id recommend scanning through ebay or your local craigslist to find a cheaper neck through. I remember having a Peavey 5 String Grind neck through for a year or so that handled pretty well and I only paid $399 for it.
I also should mention that any used ibanez BTB 5 stringer is certainly in that price range and worth every penny.

You can find some totally unexpected basses on CL. Found a Mr. Potato bass for $80 neck thru. With a laughable name, this is a hand-made Korean bass that'll blow a lot of $500 and above basses out there. Fantastic workmanship.

Not sure why the "neck thru" is a deciding factor. Open the floor to bolt-ons and you'll have more quality candidates from which to choose.
I see Carvin mentioned a handful of times. I have a Bunny Brunel which is neck-thru but that's more a matter of circumstance then meeting some pre-determined criteria.

The Washburn Taurus and Force ABT's are great bargins at the price. New they are pretty inexpensive, but used you can pick them up really cheap. Neck thru and a great feel to them. I have a very early ABT (1999) and I wouldn't trade it for the world. Beautiful bass. Great feeling neck and very playable.
You can find USA Peavey Cirrus used for $600-700. That would be my first choice with a Spector NS2-A a close second.

Ibanez makes great stuff and their neck-thrus are only a little more than that new - and used Ibanez goes for like half of new so you should, if you're willing to look and wait, be able to get a REAL nice Ibanez neck thru in that range easy.
Epiphone T-Bird Pros are a pretty good value and have decent build quality.
I'm also a huge fan of going with something built by Matsumoku (old Washburns in particular) and I'm getting rid of my Hohner B-Bass IV which is one of the nicest cheap neck-thru basses I've had for the money.

Used Reverend Thundergun on reverb right now for $650. I have one of their guitars, I paid $450 for it and it's really great.

The Thundergun is neck through? I thought it was a bolt on, but I've only seen one and didn't have much time with it. Played awesome and was deceptively light, with a great tone. Wish I'd had the funds to take it home.
