$400 to spend

Hey. If you like the TKO sound. Try and find an old used Peavey Bass head and a nice used cabinet. There was a Bass head Mk III ( 210 watts into 8 ohms, 300 into 2 ) with a 115 black widow for 250 locally on CL here.

I still like the tone. It's just too heavy for me. I got a very similar from a TC electronics BG250 115 combo. It runs $400 new. I say try out different used gear. You will save a ton. Just make sure you try it out and push it a bit.
 
I'd save another $400, assuming you are in the US. If you get a $400 amp now, you will end up spending the $800 to replace it, and will have had to suffer longer. :eyebrow:

I would avoid a combo. They are all but impossible to upgrade economically. All IMHO, YMMV, LOL, RTFM, AARP, ETC. :D
