Thanks for all the tips and support. We spent this morning trying to secure the house. We screwed the windows shut - we have A/C and an evaporative cooler, which helps circulate air, so we never really open the windows anyway. And we're covering the least secure windows thusly:
3/4" plywood, screwed right into the masonry block. They'll need a saw to get through, assuming they can get through the screwed down windows. Should also help with keeping the house cool, as it's another layer of insulation; so like a double pane window. We have insurance, and I write down the serial numbers of all the major pieces I have.
Our next door neighbor on the one side seems to have been out yesterday. In fact, when the cop arrived, I asked him to check their house. Perhaps they got hit as well. Though there is a language barrier, we are on good terms with that neighbor.
As far as other deterrences, I'm not sure about a dog. I've had my share of pets over the years. When they pass, it's a terrible loss for me. My last cat died over 10 years ago. Breast cancer of all things. Weird, I know, but I still cry over her loss sometimes. I don't know if I can deal with that anymore. I haven't had a pet since. And fortunately, our "other deterrents" in the house were locked up in the safe. I started thinking about what could have happened had I walked in on them, or him. I would hate to be responsible for the death of a young kid. The cop suggested the thief was likely a kid, based on what he didn't take. I don't like to think about it.
Anyway, one more window to cover with plywood, and then perhaps I'll work a little more on the bass. Or have a drink.
edited to add, it's like I'm in "batten down the hatches", the zombies are coming mode...
