4ohm and 8ohm cabs

Wait a second...
If you connect both cabs to the amp (parallel) then the above applies.
If you connect one cab to the amp and the second cab to the first cab, they will be connected in series, running at 12ohms.

Nope. When daisy chaining cabinets (connecting the cab#2 to cab#1) the connection will be in parallel. Cabs are always wired that way. At least 99,999999999999999999999999% of the cabs out there.

So in most of the cases I have 2 cabinets connected to an amp, no matter if they are connected directly to the amp or daisy chained, they will be in parallel?
I always thought the daisy-chain would be wired in series!

If you are keen, and your 4 ohm cab has more than one speaker, you may be able to re-wire the cab internally so it becomes 16 ohm cab and THEN run it in parallel with the other 8 ohm cab. This is what I did with my Bigfoot - originally it had 2 8ohm 12" speakers in parallel, but I rewired these in series so I could then use the resultant 16ohm cab in parallel with my 8ohm Big Ben; my amp has a switch for driving 4 or 8 ohm loads, so I set it to 4. The only 'problem' here is that the Big Foot gets proportionally less power, however - over all - I think it's worth it as the sound seems much fuller. Less watts into more speaker surface area *seems* to be much more important that running more watts into less speaker surface area...
 
Connecting them in parallel as you indicate would result in 2.67 ohms. You don't add the impedance, you have to calculate (cab1 * cab 2) / (cab1 + cab2).

That's (4 * 8) / (4 + 8) or 2.67.

If your amp cannot handle a load below 4 ohms, don't do it!

If your amp is not rated for below 4 ohms, you may blow it up or burn it out rather quickly!
 
so if an amp can handle a 2ohm load is it okay to run 2-4ohm cabs in parallel with the amp set for a 4 ohm output? as 2 ohms will be the total load with equal speakers in each cab according to the formula. or should the amp be set to an 8ohm output?
