4x10 cab advice needed

For a 4 x 10 I like the Carvin BRX Neo 410.

But... If I were you I'd go for an Avatar 2 x 12. That is a great cab at a great price.

See the new trend of excelent and light weight 115 cabs with midrange speakers. They weigh very little (sub-50lbs), are frequently louder than 610s and are generally excellent. Also, depending where you get one, they are not too expensive. In some cases, they're an absolute bargain.

Frequently louder than 610s? I find that hard to believe, but I could be wrong. If so, I'm'a get one, going cabinet hunting also.

Sorry. I should have said as loud, dependent upon driver used and the design of course. I'm merely saying there's a whole world of bass cabs that isn't noticed all that much.

I would highly suggest saving up a bit more dough before buying some "bargain" cab. There's lots of ways to scrimp and save, but one rule that should always be obeyed, don't skimp on your cab. Do what you must, but think about it. The speaker cab is the ONE thing that everyone "hears".

If it's mic'd and run through the P.A., that is. Otherwise it's essentially your personal stage monitor that won't contribute much if anything to what is heard in the house whenever a P.A. is involved.

I agree with the main point though... don't skimp. You're always going to hear it even if no one else does, so you have to be happy with it. And it has got to be durable.

Scour your local CL. I highly recommend Peavey TX and TVX cabs (used or new). Best value in a budget cab. They are inexpensive and loud, but quite heavy. There is actually a possibility that a used 410 could be had in the $250 range.

Agreed... but the OP set the parameters of discussion...

But I do quite agree - folks will spend a mint on a bass an pedals then pump it thru a lame amp, resulting in craptastic tone...

I would suggest (as posted above) an Avatar 2x12. I believe their is one on this site right now for sale.
For the money you won't go wrong.
I have an Avatar 1x12 and love it, the speaker sounds fantastic. The horn leaves a lot to be desired though.
If you have made up your mind to go with a 4x10 no matter what, then I will second the others who have suggested an SWR goliath 4x10. These have been selling very cheap on ebay and they are quality cabinets (just not the in-thing anymore).

No, no, no...dont apologize!! If there's another option besides a 410, I'm all ears.
Like I said-this is my first venture into a head & cab rig and I definitely do NOT have much expertise.

One of my drummers has 2 keyboard amps that he uses for his electronic drums so I'm OK to rehearse with him for now but the other rehearsal space only has an old, massive Peavey 1820 cab with no other amp besides my now-creaky Crate.

please, enlighten me!

As been mentioned before by a few TB'ers, $200 is not going to cut it. You'll need to fork out a little bit more if you want to get something decent. I was going to tell you to look at the Carvin BRX line of cabs, but you'll have to come up with quite a bit more mulla.

*sigh* yeah, I know $200 isnt going to get me much. I need to get the head for now because I do have that old monstrous Peavey cab available for rehearsal but I'm gonna have to keep puttin aside a little extra whenever I can.

The cover project will see a gig a lot sooner than the originals project so I have to aim toward that.
