5 string bass recommendations?

Would you be willing to put in any of your own money? I would say go for an '08 Fender Jazz from all the praise I've heard around here. Would cost a bit more than the $800 but it sounds to me like it's be worth it.

Another vote for Lakland 5501. 700 new. Excellent build quality and good for any style.

spector legend classic about 700. Just picked one up, and it is incredible slick, great range, great sound, excellent craftsmanship, low B is warm and nice. Electronics are the best.

sorry to be unclear...the school is buying the bass for me to use.

Being a school teacher too I assume that yours is like mine and has to do everything through a PO with invoices etc. Buying new is probably the best in your situation. Peavey, Ibanez, Lakland, Fender, Yamaha, etc. all make 5 string basses in your price range. If you are like me, neck width and string spacing are very important. Each company has its' own idea about what is the proper neckwidth and string spacing not to mention electonics, hardware, body shape, and choice of materials. It really depends on what YOU like.

Why not spend half that and pick up a few good quality, but inexpensive basses instead? Maybe a 5 string, a 4 string, and a fretless 4?
I bet SX could do that for a lot under $800.00.
