I played one similar to the one pictured, 19mm spacing and kinda like a Fender 5er. Nice but maybe a little wide for you as per our dicussions.

How about getting Nino to build you one to your specs?

I gotta do that eventually, his work is just beautiful.

That MTD has caught my eye and it's on the list -- as is the Lakland. The problem is that there is nowhere to play these things.

I may yet contact Nino but his basses tend to be a little more expensive than I am looking to spend. Most of the ones I've seen tend to get up around $1500-$1700.

I may be wrong about this but the Nino basses Iv'e seen also tend to have the chunkier C-shaped neck. Not my deal. I prefer them slender or assymmetrical.

No maple fretboard...

...but an Ibanez BTB can be had for less than that, and the new BTB555 is available with a maple/mahogany body instead of basswood. I think they go for around $700.

Since you don't like Fender, I think MTD and lakland are your best bets. I just don't know why you want wide spacing. I've never known you to like a bass with wide spacing. You didn't like the Squier, DeArmond Pilot, Fender, am I missing one?:)

The key is the nut width vs. the bridge width.

1.75 at the nut with full spacing at the bridge is working for me.

I think the Lakland may be right up your alley. I've owned 2 of these. One was the same color scheme as the Sadowsky you posted and I wish I still had it. Neck was great, sounded MUCH better than I expected. Nice Flat C neck. The second one I bought, an Inca Silver has a slighter chunkier neck and was a little too heavy for me to keep.

That would be about right. My basses, new, may be out of your price range.

The necks I was using from Warmoth were asymmetrical but chunky. The USAGC necks that I'm using are a C shape but thinner then the Warmoth necks.

My Carvin neck has the wide/asymetrical neck and it's exactly what I'm in love with. I was just telling someone else via PM that I may just order another Carvin with the same neck but with a Maple FB/Soaps and call it a day.

The only thing stopping me is that I'm not totally ecstatic about the electronics in my Carvin and I'll be replacing the preamp with an Audere. I'd hate to order a brand new custom new bass with the assumption that I'll be immediately replacing the pre.

Just out of curiousity, what have you heard about the new Carvin electronics suite?

Here are some soundclips I recorded of my Icon. You can judge for yourself: Link Removed

My Icon has the mid sweep. The preamp is much better than that on my 5 string Carvin kit bass. You might also try asking Talkbasser Classic Jazz. He has a very nice Carvin Elite model with the new preamp. The new ones are 18 volt now.

I've heard great things about the Z5's. . . and our very own Adrian Garcia has one for sale on bassgear.com. I'm pretty sure he has a return policy if you don't dig it. . . I believe it has the wide/asymetrical neck too. :)
