5 string like a Darkstar?

Okay, so someone either tell me WHY Dark Stars are so desirable, OR point me to a link you found in a search whilst ridiculing my inability or unwillingness to do it on my own...

The have IMHO a perfect balance of fullness and bite. Great definition and clear tone. Not honky, not thin and not all dark or muddy. That's a pretty tough achievement I think, and considering they have that quality of sound without a preamp, AND are nice and loud means (IMHO again) I can have it all without fooling around with batteries, without having excessive knobs that make a chore out of finding just the right sound. They're just magically good! The beefy looks sure don't hurt anything either..

I've already got all the other parts, just need the pickup, been waiting years, can't give up now!!!

BTW I love the looks of them too...hope they aren't too 'spensive now...

Fred - can you give us a hint of what the routing dimensions would have to be? I want to build my 5-string bass with pickups that are just a little smaller so I can upgrade later.

I emailed them about 2-3 weeks ago about a 5 string Darkstar. This was the response: "Please check back in about 3 months."

Maybe that helps a little...

Looks like a Darkstar at the neck but a Chi-Sonic at the Bridge.

That's a First-Act "Bikini clad" pickup at the bridge. It's the same chrome surround as on their guitar pickups. Those are designed by Kent Armstrong... at least some of them are. I have a set of the non Armstrong (I think) pickups in my First-Act GarageMaster guitar ... they are very dark sounding.

Fred, congratulations on the 5 string pickups... I know first hand how hard it is to manufacture something!

Things are tough all over, but I'll still line up and buy my pair when Fred finally overcomes all his ills. Again...hang in there, Fred!!!

most people on the forums have given up on fred hammon. some orders have been unfulfilled for the past couple years. I think its safe to say that he is no longer in the business. shame. i bought my darkstars in 2007. best pickups ever, period. no discussion. if you ever get youre hands one a set, you'll know why.
