I have a Stingray 5, a Lakland DJ5 and a Lakland 55-01. To me that covers three of the four types I want in my arsenal, the fourth is a P bass. It's my least favorite type of bass of the four but I have those rare times when a P bass would fit the bill. I've played 5 strings for 26 years and have no desire to change that, so that greatly limits the pool of instruments. I'm thinking of making it a P/J so I can dial in a little J definition when needed. Since it's a sparsely used tool for me, I'm not intending to spend a ton of money on it. I've narrowed it down to the Yamaha BB435 and the new Jackson CBXM V David Ellefson. I've had Yamaha TRB's and have always been impressed with the quality and I know that the BB has a pretty big following. The Jackson looks great on paper but I've never owned or been drawn to them before (that pointy headstock, ew) but these new ones have a good aesthetic and specs.
I like a 35" scale which the Jackson has, but my Stingray has shown that a 34" scale fiver can be great as well. The Yamaha is a 34".
I judge them equal in looks, but there's no place within HOURS of me that have either, so it would likely be a Talkbass or more likely a Reverb purchase. Also the Jackson is only available in black/white or white/black, while the Yamaha has a couple more colors (teal-blue, tobacco sunburst, etc).
I'm open to others but these two keep rising to the top for me (having never played either).
I'd love some input on either of these or something along the same line and price range. Someone who's played BOTH would be extremely helpful.
