this bass used to belong to Dan Lakin himself...I had Lakland replace the neck ( I wanted blocks) and add the J pickup.

This has the Nordy pickups as the Hanson P 5 was not ready when I got it...definitely keeper!

Here is a little different take on a 5 string Precision. This one was just finished an is en-route to Australia. Making this one unique: A one piece slab was re-sawn and the body chambered and re-joined and fully contoured. The pickup is a total custom: Fralin wound a 3+2 split coil on custom spaced Grove built bobbins. The pickup should theoretically be 66% hum cancelling and was dead quiet at idle. Tone is typical Fralin '51P + a low b.

That is exactly the mod I want on my Lakland except I think I want the J pup closer to the bridge by a half or quarter inch.

I played the Carvin passive P-Bass V string the other day.

If you prefer a flatter neck radius, 1.75 nut width, 34" scale, 19 mm spacing, for around a grand....this is the shiznit.

If you prefer more vintage radius, 20 frets, 1.81 nut width and 18mm spacing the Fender American Standard P5 is a very respectable performer. It's not a Mike Lull, but it's not 35" scale either.

I'd like to know more about White Lightning ... in particular USA or converted Skyline ? (can't see the headstock) what are the pickups, and does it get you a nice vintage P tone (sounds like it might do from your remark above) ?

A Brief history of White Lightning:

The neck is off of a 2002 Lakland 55-76 bass (I had an ebony board put on that bass since it is black)...the neck on the PJ5 has GREAT BEM!!!

The body is one that Carl Pedigo (master luthier and Lakland employee - part time) had in his shop. This body is actually the FIRST P5 body ever made at Lakland...it was never made into a bass and was made to "test" the concept. The body is 100% hand cut and formed by Carl.

The paint is a "blue hue" pearloid .....wish there were a bit more blue visible at times but the paint is very rich and beautiful in person.

It is strung with flats (I am a rounds guy and have rounds on the other 2 Ps)

controls are V/V T/T...thinking about switching to V/B T/T

It has the Hanson "Vintage pickups" in it...they are great sounding! Vintage is the word....

I had an older P Deluxe V, it was too "hard" and modern sounding for me. Didn't really capture the P fatness, didn't really capture the J growl. Beautiful bass though.

I currently have a Fender P5 (great for that traditional 60's P sound) and a Nordstrand VP5 (wonderful aggressive 70's P thing). Both are currently wearing Chromes, although I'd love to find a set of rounds that gives me some more snap without sounding thin/weak in comparison to the Chromes. Any suggestions?

Just got my Fender AmStd P5 shimmed and set up exactly how I like it. Plays really well, and though I have Delanos coming in a couple of months, the stock pups sound really good through my portaflex. The B sounds pretty good now, but I'm hoping the new pups beef it up even more.

You mean they have something approximating to an MM humbucker and not something that looks more like 2 jazzes squished together ? What years (approx) did they make those ?

If that's what you mean (a) I've never seen one and (b) I'd love to try one, sounds right up my street.

I had one, and it is very high on my list of basses I most regret letting go. I loved that modern, active tone! I like an aggressive P-bass with high end like George Duke bassist back in the day, Byron Miller.

Me too! I just bought this one from a fellow TBer last week. It REALLY sounds good with my old Ampeg V4. MAN they pair up nice! I haven't had time to do any laps with it on my Mesa Walkabout Scout stack but I'm sure that will be fine too. Mine is also pretty light compared to many 5s I have played. Really comfortable. My main bass is a Fender Roscoe Beck V but this will edge its way into some stage time for sure. As stated above, if you like the four, you will like the five. Same bass, one more string.
