Agreed with above Mercalli 5 recommendation. Used one in the classifieds right now I think. Reverse P/MM configuration, very versatile.

I have played a Lakland before and liked it. The nut width and scale don't bother me. not sure though how well it can mimick a pbass like tone? Anybody?
The BB735A might be too narrow at the nut. I have a 4 string p bass with 44mm nut width and that's my favorite bass. That neck is a real baseball bat. I'd like to get my hands on a BB735a to get a feel for the neck. On paper it does look pretty much like what I want.
I do like the idea of the G&L but every time I pick one up I just don't feel it. Not sure what and what it is.
I'm looking for a used 5 string. The music I play is blues, RnB, some classic Rock, Country etc. I'd like to get something that can cover all of the above. Max price is about $1200. I am very partial to a P-Bass body or similar. For whatever reason I never got comfortable with a J bass.
Basses I have looked at so far:
Yamaha BB425x
Lakland Skyline 55-02
G&L Tribute L2500
I looked at a Sire V7 just to check out the electronics but hated the knobs layout. I'd love to get my hands on a P5. The L2500 was alright but I felt there were too many switches.
I do own a Ray35 which can cover 75% of what I do but is lacking where a pbass would fit best. Can the Lakland cover those sounds alright? What else should I be looking at?
I also own a Ray 35 and can get a pretty convincing P-bass if I cut the treble, boost the low mids, and pluck near the neck, especially with flats on it.

I need to track one down. Atlanta doesn't really have a store with a great selection.[/QUOTE said:I bought mine sight unseen after seeing a thing on Youtube about how EMG pickups can sound like any other pickup. I've played other LTD basses so I knew the comfort and playability were almost certainly there, definitely paid off for me. With steel strings, the bass can do literally anything. Super bright, turn the tone knob down and now it's warmer, take it from the P pickup to the middle position and now it has a scooped sound, it does everything.
I think you’ll find the Lakland to be too polite for what you are doing.
get the 425x if you can. Yamaha discontinued those BBs, the new series is also nice, but different.
the old ones (415/425) had a big comfy body and a bridge pickup that was more Hofner-like than J-like, now it doesn't happen and any of the new BBs don't feel and sound like this.
If I cannot get a deal on the 425x from today, I might just try to find a 1025x.
please note that 425 and 425x is the same bass, the only difference is pickguard. same for 1025 and 1025x.
