I think I'll call it that from now on!!! It has a satin finish on the body and polyester finish on the fingerboard (for durability and more high end) and I took an angled shot with flash to try to show the figure and bird's eye better. I assume it will look like this under stage lights, too.

Interestingly enough, it's carved to perfection, almost like a marble statue of a woman......not to sound strange or nothin'. :smug:

Being a Wal player, which cut through any band, but are very valuable, I have been on the search for a less expensive alternative.

A G&L L2500 is one that has a similar personality to my Wal fretteds. And you can get one new for about $1500.

Another choice could be any bass you like that has a good combination of woods/pick-ups that would allow punch and cutting and put in the ACG Filter that is about the closest to the Wal electronics available currently.

Damn you, I've been reading some stuff on his basses now and think I might at least get into contact with him. Are there any sound clips/video's of his basses around? What do you think they'd be like in a band context?

So far list is;
EB SR5 20th ann. Which I don't think i'll be able to get (frustrating)

We've got a few G&L's local as well, didn't think about them. Will have a look too.

Cliff has a dude on his myspace page that uses his bass, I recon the clip on Cliff's page would be his bass. I'll probably be recording with one of my bands on it, but it could take a hell of a long time before the tune is mixed and mastered.

Cheers mate, sent him an e-mail. Basses are looking better and better.

Will also look at MTD and Roscoe as well, though i'm not a big fan of their looks :p

If anyone is interested, latest project clips can be found here for the style i'm playing (I don't know how to describe it). Excuse the poor bass skillz though.

Well, I sold a super-sweet birdseye necked, RW board, mid 90's transition-bridge (kinda rare I've heard) Stingray to get a used Lakland 55-94 w/ birdseye fretboard. The Stingray wasn't cutting through with my band, the Lakland cuts through no matter what situation. It's my number one bass, period! My Dingwall Afterburner is my number 2. The longer B string (35" Lakey & 37" Dingwall) kills all the 34" 5ers, IMO. Of course Sadowsky fans will argue for days that their B strings are tight. I dunno, since my Lakland has me never wanting for any other Fender/MM type bass. I can't recommend strongly enough both Lakland and Dingwall! Dingwalls' sound and string tension are unequalled, but the fanned frets and extended scale lengths are a bit of an obstacle. This is why my Lakland is #1. If I played my Dingwall all the time (as much as I play low on the B) I'd probably develop chronic hand pain.... I was starting to have problems before I went back to my 55-94. I would buy ANY Dingwall or US Lakland (and probly any Korean Skyline) without playing them first. In fact, I did just that.... 2 Dingers (5er and 6er) and my 55-94 Lakey. The 6er belongs to RichL now. Good luck in your quest.

Interesting. The fanned frets actually created problems for you? I'm heading towards a used Lakland/Sadowsky + either a custom or dingwall/modulus. A standard SR 5 HH is also on the list, but I don't know how they compare to the 20th Anniversary one (I could only play a single H version). Though I won't be going Dingwall route if I can't hear the basses first, from limited sources of what i've heard so far they were fairly bland :hmm:

PS. Is a dinger only Aussie slang or something? haha :p

I strongly disagree with the "bland" adjective. I own an extensive high end herd (and have tried even more high end basses) and Dingwalls are nowhere close to sounding bland. I always get asked from producers, artists and bandmates to bring the "fanned" fret to the studio or to the gig.

I own a Velvet finish MM SR5. It kills every other SR5 I've compared it with but it's no match to my Z2 Dingwalls. The Z1, Z2, Z3 and Prima Artist lines sound different from one another yet they all sound full, huge and defined.

Yeah the extra long distance between frets 1 thru 5 on the low B, and the extra wide neck on my 6er, plus the busy basslines I had to play in that area of the neck..... all led to pain in my palm from the extreme stretching. The 5er has a skinnier neck and is not a problem if I don't play it exclusively. The passive Afterburners are not bland at all, IMO. I think they sound like a modern jazz on steroids.... growly, snarling, rabid jazz bass with piano-like clarity. Turn a knob and it gives P bass-like sound, plus a couple other tones....very versatile!! My Lakland is more mellow, so I use the Dinger on tunes where the B can shine or I need more "NASTY".

Hey, goto basstasters and listen to the soundclips that include an Afterburner II (has preamp) [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] . If the Dinger slap clip doesn't stand out from the rest, then maybe Dingwalls aren't for you. :)

Thanks mate, good to hear. What are the Afterburner's like compared to the higher up models in your opinion? As i'd no way be able to afford a Z1-3.
