like what most people say. Some people get 5-6-7 string basses because all of the notes are in one area (1-7th) frets. I mean yes, you can do those notes on 4 string basses but u have to look for the notes and you have to do more work. Like Victor Wooten, he uses 4 strings but man, sometimes he has to SWITCH HANDS to play the notes (left hand on right, right hand on left). And also, Chord Progression. Some people might wanna do a scale, and while they are going down lower, u don't have anything lower than E .. Pretend your playing a descending C scale off the A string, which will go down to the B string. thats when people need that B string. To complete that scale with low notes. People might say play it on a higher/lower frets. But then again, that sound that comes from a B string won't come out of an E string, and some people love that B string sound. Some people might want a 5 string (EADGC) to do some chord things with the DGC strings. or... like I said before.. if you wanna do some progressions of some sort on G and you wanna do high notes. YOu don't have to search around the fretboard for the notes.. or you don't have to do as much work if you have the C string there for you. There is no "No REASON to get a 5,6,7+ string Bass". Each person has their own reason of getting that bass. Some people just get it to look cooler
