5 weeks...no bass.... HELP :(

Thanks for the reply's. My mum suggested that I buy a bass out there:hmm: Any thoughts on that?
Dan

As an Aussie I'd suggest you don't. Equipment here is very overpriced. The used market here isn't very large, and new prices can be extortionist. You are probably going to pay around 200-250€ minimum for the cheapest, crappiest brand new bass. IMO, I think you may be better off buying one and bringing it over.

+1....australia is choc full of extornionists....;) LOL
+1....equipment here is way over-priced....being originally from the United States, I complain about this all the time....even with the strong Aussie dollar, there's still very little to be found in good deals here...

Looks like you have a market for US basses.

What would be the best deal and most wanted bass to bring over there? MIA Fender, Lakland Skyline, SR?

Highway 1 Fenders list for $1500 AU here new...
other MIA Fenders list for >$2K new (i've saw a Jazz Dlx QMT V with a $3800 sticker on it (gulp!) )

Stingrays list new here for about $3k (can find plenty of used ones in the $1500 range)

Lakland Skyline 55-02 sell for about $2200 - $2300 retail

ALL are desired basses...less Aussies play Lakland, but it's growing...

SR's are very popular here, as are Fenders...

if you want to do a little price researching of your own, try:

www.basscentre.com.au (large selection of stingrays and Fenders)
www.guitar.com.au (carry Lakland and EBMM)
www.venuemusic.com.au (some Fender prices)

buy a cheapie here and then unbolt the neck and throw it in your suitcase! This works awesome....and it doesn't matter how many flights you have....and you don't have to fiddle with it as a carry on or buy a case to put it under.

Stingrays list new here for about $3k (can find plenty of used ones in the $1500 range)
(some Fender prices)

Stingrays start at about $3k, and go anywhere up to nearly $4.5k for 5 string (depending on the details - LTD edition, HH, etc). Bass Centre are asking $4500 for a 30th anniversary SR5.

My next Stingray is coming from the US. There is no way I'm buying another new one from a local dealer at those sort of prices!

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I'm going to go with that Harley Benton short scale :) And I'll be taking my Sansamp and headphone adaptor so I can play along to tunes on my ipod :) I'll be in Sydney for two weeks, are there alot of music shops out there? Are they picky about people trying out basses?
Dan

There a a few. Go to parramatta Road Anandale, where there are about 5 guitar stores in a row, including the bass player, sydneys only electric bass only store and the bass shop, sydneys only double bass only store. everyone is nice there, but there isnt really much point as there really isnt anyhting different and it costs more too:bawl:

Cool :) I'm not really interested in buying out there, just fancied trying a few things out. It's coming up to the time of the year to look for a new bass again so I want to try a few different aninamls out:hyper: Do the shop owners need a good reason to allow you to try a bass out? In shops in my homeland they only let you try a bass usually if you want to buy a bass there and then :bawl: But I usually do the whole 'I have a hefty wad of cash' scheme :D
