+2 on that setup. I was gigging with an old GK400RB and Bag End 15 (no horn) until very recently. Light weight, good sound. I was looking to add another S15D for bigger gigs when I found a Schroeder cab locally. Otherwise I'd still be using the GK/BE setup.

I started out w/ a Peavey 215 with the black widows, was a nice cab. The only ding I'd have is that all Peavey cabs seem pretty darned heavy! I bought a B100R (Ampeg) w/ the intent of it being my rehearsal amp, but pleasantly found it is more than enough for many of the clubs I play. Plus it's a lot easier on the back...definitely something to consider. I don't think I've ever bought a rig that at some point (when I was carrying it) that I didn't think "man, I wish this was lighter - why didn't I take up the flute?"

I'm 55, and been playing since 1968. Have played every
rig imaginable (currently Epifani/Alembic F2B/QSCPLX2402 and
SWR Baby Blue), but I keep in my inventory just for those
gigs where they let me roll it out an

EV B215M and a Musicman HD130

which produces the classic vintage tone, but is small
enought to play in a club with great results. There is just
something about two 15" high quality woofers being driven
by a tube amp that cannot be duplicated

This is an excellent idea. I use an old 400RB + an EV 15 for band practice and it works great. Definitely will get an old school vibe going. There are always 400RB's available on ebay. My main amp used to be the 400RB with 2 15's and it worked fine. I was happy with that setup until I found this place. :eek:

Thanks and these are great options but I just picked up a Peavy nitrobass amp for about $200. Maybe I should have gone the combo route but live and learn- right. I need a cab now. Perhaps a single 1X15 or I have someone I know with an Ampeg SVT 410-HE he wants to sell at a decent price . This may be a little too much. It's the 8 ohm version that probably needs some help on the low end, it supposedly only gets down to about 60-70 hz. The other AMPEG 4 ohm SVT-410 HLF version is the one that can be considered a single cab. Anyone with any experience with these?--THanks

Theres nothing wrong with that rig, many good cabs roll off quite high. (Eden comes to mind). You dont need that super low-end.

get a markbass rig man :) Im 20 years old and so pleased I dont have an ampeg but a markbass head that weighs less than a baby and a pair of cabs that I can almost lift with one arm.

Oh and this thing can do everything from vintage motown thump to modern slap crackle. Unless you're a true tube lover and won't play anything else then get a big heavy rig. Remember, most of the audience don't know or don't care what rig you use, if it sounds good to you, that's all that matters.

Good luck with your choice, I hope I'm still rocking at 58! :)

I personally would back off the Ampeg cab. If you're goal is playing around the house a 1x12 Avatar would do nicely. They go deep enough and you can always add another if you feel it necessary down the road.

There are more gucci choices out there but the Avatar stuff is good sounding and won't break the bank. If part of your goal is recording, I'd be looking for a good quality, dedicated bass pre after a while. For the most part these days I record using a 70's Alembic F2B. Truly a classic and really easy to find a good sound with.

Right now isn't a good time to buy unless you find someone really hungry and in need of the cash for Christmas (and you wouldn't do that to them would you). After the holidays look around for the January deals - they'll be a lot less than right now. (In the UK I saw what was advertised as a great deal - it was about 20% more than normal - it's just the season for acquisition thirsty buyers.)

Ashdown were doing some really sharp deals in October - in Europe they were selling a MAG 4 x 10s for £185 - that's about $330 and that included 20% tax. I couldn't buy the speaker chassis for that.

If it is any help to you, in the 70's I used a 63 Gibson with
a Acoustic 140 head with a 2x15 106 cab.

Now it is an assortment of basses, a medium homemade cab
2x12 that was computer modelled paired with an Eden WT-400.

For a big rig, I went to a SWR Sm-900 with 2 4x10 cabs
bridged at 4 ohms. I can also use 1 4x10 at 8, and that
was fine for a big room with PA support. The 4x10's
fit in the back of my Volvo sedan.

At 135 lbs for the Acoustic cab, that sucker stays in the
rehearsal space. I never did give up the original stuff.

You want some basic good ole motown/classic rock?
As long as you don't need to go too loud, Ampeg B100R, and nearly any Precision with flatwounds. Done, and relatively cheap. You ought to be able to buy both used, here, for around $700 total.

Heres my 2 cents. Get a GK BacKline 600, 300 watts @4 ohms. 180 watts @8 ohms. Easy to get a vintage rock sound. You can get one off Ebay for about $200-$250 or a new one for $299. They hold their value better than alot of heads. Then get an Avatar 112 cab 8 ohm. Very light , but killer tone and volume. This setup would be fine for smaller to med. gigs. Then if you gig bigger venues later, you can just add another 112 8 ohms (for a 4 ohm load) @300 watts and run the xlr out to the PA if needed. Powerful, great sound, yet compact and light :bassist:
