I am shifting from four stringer to a six . I am still a noob so i am really confused cause i just found out that a six string bass has lesser string spacing (16.5-17mm usually). I am used to my Ibanez gsr200 (19mm).
So does this create a problem for playing funk style stuff (slap etc..)??...My definition of funk is T.M Stevens..

It depends on if you can adapt to the tighter spacing or not. I play tight spaced 5's no problem, and can seamlessly go back and forth between my 4 string jazz and my 5'ers.

If you want to be funky on a six, put in the work, and you will maintain all of your technique and then be able to use the extended range to even more effect. After seeing Bill Dickens slap on a seven string, and having owned a few sixes myself, I know you can do it if you try (and try and try)!

Is it possible to play slap basslines with a lot of attack ??

In my opinion: absolutely. You might need to adjust your technique to suit the bass, but I don't see why it's not possible. I went from playing a Fender Jazz to an Ibanez SR506 and while my slapping was extremely sloppy at first, some practice brought it back up to snuff.

no way is it less funky, slapping is not as easy with tighter spacing but believe me if you go for wide spacing you will have a lot more trouble playing things that you normally would on a 4.

Within reason, string spacing is not that big a deal to me. I love SR5s, and they have close string spacing. I love my USA Millennium, and it's spacing is a bit close to. If you like the overall feel of a bass, you will get used to string spacing. For what it is worth, I love Fender and Lakland necks too, and they have full 19mm spacing. The only time I ever have a problem is going from say a 55-94 neck to SR5 neck. That adjustment takes me a second or two.

Also remember funk is not just slapping. Since you like TM Stevens, try to find the Narada Michael Walden greatest hits CD. Stevens killed on the 1981 jam "I Should've Loved You" that song, as well as that whole CD had some of the most awesome, Bernard Edwards style finger funk I ever heard. All that funky finger stuff translates directly to six string and gets even easier since you can often go across the fingerboard instead of up and down. That is one thing I miss about my old Ken Smith and Yamaha TRB6 basses.:bawl:

Hi..kinda new here..just joined to read up on whats hip in bass amps. Im a guitar player. Saw this thread..I was TM's bass tech for a while back in like '92..ungodly bass player --especially on his solo stuff most people never heard--. Anyway..in all the shows I did with him he never used a 6-string, he had a couple 5's but live it was all custom Warwick Streamer Stage I's. I just picked one up for my basement jam room..love their sound.

Absolutely.
Mathematically, it's 23% less funk for every string more than four. Sixers are still able to funk it out at around a diluted 54%.
Dr. Bill Collins of P. University is trying to formulate a theory that would explain why "the Buddha" can maintain funk in an antiMu-Tron field of below 50% with his 7-string.
