6 string = less funk ???

If yu can deal with a tightly spaced bass, regardless of string number, it's no big deal. I dislike tight spacing but I could still play one if I had to. Get a bass that's comfortable for you, not just for a type of music or style. The bass itself doesn't dictate either.
 
Of course you can still funk it up! You'll have to learn to accomodate the extra strings, but the spacing shouldn't be a problem. I slap all the time on my Hohner 4 string which is 16.5 mm at the bridge. Mark King's Kingbasses have 16.5mm string spacing (well, the later prototype models and the ones he uses now do) and they're also 4 strings.
