6 Strings: Why did I wait so long?

6 strings - a musical revelation. A whole new world. Once I got a six, I never looked back. Now I would rather play a four or a six - a five feels incomplete somehow.

I have seen the light, or in this case, the strings.

I got my first 6 string bass, a custom Vadim, last saturday. While I expected playing a 6 to be different than a four, I still can't get over how different it really is. And when I say "different", I mean it in the best way possible. A whole new world of bass playing has been opened up to me, and in the few days since I got my new bass, I realize that I have a LOT of exploring to do. I honestly feel like I have discovered the bass guitar all over again. Not only that, but every time I pick it up, I get this feeling of "Ahhhh so THIS is what a bass was meant to do!" and it feels GOOD.

Remember, back when you started playing, and you played, but still hadn't had THE moment? And then one day, BAM! suddenly you find the groove, your body and the bass are not just interacting but are uniting to form a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts? Remember that feeling? You thought "Yes! Now I get it! This is what it's all about!" And it's that ecstatic, euphoric, overwhelmingly delicious feeling that envelops your body and and the very core of your being and you know you have arrived.

Well, it happened again. Moving to a 6 string has blown my mind. Hours fly by and my fingers caress the fretboard, coaxing new sounds and feeling forward. It's a second honeymoon with the bass guitar and I'm discovering a whole new way to make love to sound.

Just had to get it out.

I was expecting a Roscoe 6er (my 1st real 6 string) to be delivered today, but nothing but a false alarm! The Canada Post truck pulled up... but they were delivering a box of work stuff for my wife!

6 is all I know... It was my first bass... I have a 4 stringer just to play around with, but most of the time I play my 6... When I play my 4, I wonder where the rest of the strings are...

Oooh... had a similar experience when I put the Nordys and Bart pre in my MTD Z6...

But I have to remind myself, as much as I love to play in 6 string fretless land, I'm still a supportive member of 99% of the bands I'm in, not a lead player... So "having an epiphany" will often get me fired ;-)

But the ergonomics that the 6 string affords for movement chord-to-chord for your chord notes is second to none!

Last night I was grooving with my Dingwall Prima Artist 6 (not the first ever Prima Artist 6, that I own too, but the first ever chambered Prima Artist). It feels like 7th heaven!!! So I know the feeling!!!

Congrats, nice bass man. I must warn you thought its addictive, first you get a six string then you get another and another and pretty soon you have 4 or 5 a few fretless and wind up ordering a 8 string. Whats next a 11 string bass, I sure hope so. =

Yep. I am up to 5 sixers and always keep an eye out for a good deal on another one. I think my TL-6 is the finest instrument I have ever played. Well articulated about the feeling you get when you sit down with a sixer and really "get" it.

I really, really wish Vadim was more well known and he could spend more time making basses. What a true artist. I would love to have him make me a bass someday just so I could support the guy a little. What an amazing builder.

I knew that a six was right for me very early on and I haven't looked back. It's what I heard in my head and it's what makes me feel like I can play my best on. A good six string is a really special thing in the right hands.

LOL I had this exact same experience when I picked up my 4 string after a couple hours with the 6! Suddenly I was like "Wait wait! Where'd the rest go?"

Yeah, Vadim is a spectacular and yet amazingly unknown builder. But the people who do have one of his few basses are the lucky ones!

Umm, excuse me, that should be a treble clef on the fretboard, because after all, you're really playing a guitar now since you have that extra string on there.

I like to think of my A string as the Tao of my bass on my 5 string. Definitely hope to hop up to the 6 one day though. We'll see how bad my GAS gets.
