john - yeah.... i met the guy through CL. all the info i have is coming from him. he told me that they "sent him this bass to see if he wanted to be endorsed by Conklin". and that it was that color when he go it.

sorry, but i don't remember the gent's name. i'm kinda crap with names. actually.... yes, his name is Ed Platt. he teaches at Red House in Walnut Creek and their website has him listed. he plays with "Enchant"... i guess they play with Dream Theater a lot.

woot.

I've owned 4-7.. after acclimating to a BString it makes no sense to go back to standard EADG..

I find a 7 easier to play than a 6.. use them all the time for acoustic duos etc..

It is kind of funny watching folks count the strings (happens at least 2x per gig)..

I use the high strings to chord behind a guitar player.

JT turned me onto them.. I"m sincerely considering an upgrade.

i've heard of enchant, they're pretty cool. it actually does remind me of edo's old bass - i wonder if that's what it is - is there anything on the back of the headstock? edo might have traded it in on something and then bill or mike thought ed might like it.

i need to get bill my most recent kit - i used to be listed on the old page, but he didn't relist me when they changed pages a couple years ago. since i haven't been as busy recently it hasn't been a priority i guess heh.

I had one for some time around 7 or so years ago. GT7. I really liked it. Really well built instrument for the money but I didn't exactly love the pickups.. They sounded surprisingly good, but I always felt they didn't do justice to what the bass had to deliver. I might be wrong but I'm thinking they were mighty mites at that time.

I was forced to sell mine after a year or so and I decided I'd get the GTBD model later on but that hasn't happened. Someday..

oh, and i guess i'm being rude :D

here's my basses. i haven't played anything less than a 7 since 1993.

you know... i actaully took the preamp out of mine. i use a fair bit of efx and most of my stuff is happier with a passive signal. i LOVE the tones i get out of my GT7... i just like the string tension on fanned frets a lot.

john - i'm out doing Wife Pacification Duties. i'll look at the back of the headstock when i get home.
so, how well does the low F work for you? do you stay off of it except for in very spefic situations? what gauge do you string on the F? it's VERY intersting to me.

thanks!

BassMan7pm - hey there. i picked up a Conklin GT 7.... i'm not near good enough to play/NEED one, i just got a really good deal on one. it's a non-production blue color too....

.... mine's tuned like a 6 with the high F. was wondering about your tuning... does the low F# come through well amped? is is it too floppity? i'm saving up for a fanned fret right now 'cause i've never been super happy with how most B's feel.

it IS a REALLY nice bass!

lol.... so.... neck divey... i put UltraLite tuners on... it helped a BIT... but only when standing. that's a HUGE cutaway.

I award you bonus points for the Aphex Twin sticker!

My view is not represented in the poll options, which is:
Definitely for the collection, but also definitely for a LTR, and "main rocker" status TBD when acquired.

The only one I've ever tried in person, and the only one which I found was remotely affordable (both key elements) was a Conklin GT-7 Korean-made bass. I would have bought the fretless one if they would have made it without the fretlines. The fretlines are unfortunately, a deal-breaker.

When I played one, I enjoyed it immensely and could see using musically it in a number of different contexts, but not all of them.

John.. is there a worthy upgrade preamp for the GT7.. my thought would be some type of Bart may make it pop a bit more...

I gig mine in a duo.. not one inot modding basses.. have been told the biggest improvement to the BD is the preamp.

Looking to learn.

i know a bunch of guys who have replaced the standard preamp with a bart btmb, and a few who've used a duncan 3 band. i don't really have any personal experience with the gt's (all my conklins are custom :D ).

i know of a guy who got one and then painted and refinished the board. looked pretty cool - he matched the burgandy color of the body pretty well and the lines were gone.

the gt 7s always had bart pickups in them, and a bart designed but mighty-mite made bass/treble preamp. the 4 and 5 string gt's had the mighty mite pickups in them, iirc.

Ah, makes sense. I just remember seeing the mighty mite name somewhere.

There was a gtbd with an aguilar 3 preamp on the uk basschat classifieds very recently. I could've bought it in a week or two but as all of you probably know, the best deals show up the day after you've blown all your money on something completely unnecessary...
