700 watt head into a 200 watt speaker

Having an "accident" with a lot of power behind it doesn't usually end well. I see the results all too often.

Last I saw GK has reasonable bench charges.
So get the combo electronics fixed. Call them, Pull the head out and send it in.
My question is how did the owner blow the electronics - chances are it's not a major problem.

Does GK work on out-of-warranty amps (for a fee, of course)? I thought I saw a couple of posts, in other threads, stating that they didn't. Perhaps I misread them or missed some context.

As for the OP, if the combo/cab is really cheap, it might be worth it for running with your current amp for jamming with acoustic guitars. Personally, I'd want to get it fixed if I could.

• You'd have a backup amp/head.
• The combo will be a lot more convenient to lug around than your 1001 RB, cable, and its bones. It'll also look prettier at the coffeeshop when you're trying to impress the barista.
• As I recall, the heads in those combos are voiced differently than the 700 RB is (at least that was my impression when playing a friend's through some different cabs, but that was years ago -- I wouldn't be surprised if they were high-passed higher, though, among other things).

Is the internal speaker on the combo 4 Ohms or 8? I remember an extension cab being available with them, which makes me think 8 Ohms... which would make your 1001 RB a little safer to run into it.

You might be able to hear the speaker getting stressed and back off in time but how do you know how much you are putting into it. Its a guess.

I'd buy a cheap Rumble to do the jam jobs personally if you dont have a suitable modular set up.

They really should be the first stop. If the amp died, then the speaker may have damage. They know the history of their own amps. And I still believe it will not be a huge repair bill.

Cool -- if they'll work on it, that seems the most logical resort. The head from that combo is fairly light and compact -- if the cab and speaker are all right, it shouldn't be that much to ship to the factory.

I fried the head of a GK 115 combo I had and bypassed the head, turning it into a 115 cabinet. It was super light and worked great that way. Never hooked it up to a 1001RB though! In my case, the repair bill was about the same as the replacement cost so I went the route I did.

Besides 2 Mesa subway 15's which I normally use, I often run a Mesa wd800 into 2 stacked Ampeg 2x10s (each 200 watts @ 8 ohm ). The Mesa has the option of 4/8 or 2 ohms. I run it at 2 ohms into the Ampegs thus giving 600 watts or thereabouts. I keep the master V very reasonable ( at the first master V sweet spot roughly around 10:00 ) , and have never had an issue . Even at the Mesa 's full 800 watts it's fine if used intelligently at all times...

The real issue is that common sense and reasonable expectations aren't as common as we think they are.
