'74 P-bass for $5000 on e-bay - ***?

Totally crappy condition? Check.
The finish mechanically stripped like an old coffee table? Check.
Truss rod issue? Check.
Frets gone? Check.
Pickups and wiring questionable? Check.
Price > the most tricked out NYC Sadowsky? Check.

Made in 1974? -> OK, all is forgiven, I guess. :rollno:

Jim - curious how you can tell that it has a truss rod issue and that the frets are bad? They look ok to me as far as I can see from the picture, but am eager to be "schooled." :)

I wouldn't pay $5k for it, but aside from the truss rod and frets I might pay $1500. But only if it sounds good.

I'm a 37 year old geezer then! :)

I like new equipment, but I also like old basses that look like they have seen legitimate action - provided they play and sound well.

Just wondering what Jim can see in the pic about the truss rod and frets.

The truss rod nut is sunk into the heel about 1/8", which means it can't be tightened much more, if at all. The 2nd fret in that closeup looks to be quite flat on the E string side.

What part of "best offer" auction don't people around here get?
Every time a "best offer" auction pops up on ebay with an old Fender, someone makes a post just like this.

I really don't think that the seller expects to get the "buy it now" price.
That's just to get your attention.


I think this type of auction is by the seller to keep the potential buyers from seeing how much people are willing to bid on these.


A PIG like that isn't going to fetch anywhere near the "Buy it now" price.

if it's like you say....well, then my impression of the seller is not serious. i saw once a 10yrs old 51 r.i. p-bass CIJ in a localshop here and the seller asked $1200 for it. if a seller starting with pricetags like this then i can't think of him as a serious seller because he's is trying to get this money out of it. IMO that's not serious.

I honestly don't see anything misleading.

The only thing that could be questionable is the originality of the pickup. He stated that he "believes" the parts to be original. He may believe in Santa Clause too.

Looks like Ash to me.

He said it looks like someone tried to strip the body.

Shows close ups of the parts that are questionalbe.

What's misleading here?

It's a total PIG IMO, but I don't see this person misleading anyone here.
