I've begun refurbishing my trusty old '75 Fender Jazz, which I played constantly for the first 10 years of it's life but hasn't seen much action for years. Around '78, I treated it to DiMarzios, Grovers and a BadAss but now I'm wondering if I should replace the stock nut with brass or graphite - what do you guys think?
Two questions come to mind, one is whether this is too major of a mod to what is now a bit of a collectors item. The second is whether the mod is worth the effort since it only affects open string play. And what is the difference, sound-wise, between brass and graphite? Oops, I guess that's really three questions. It's a great playing and sounding bass, and even though it needs a re-fin, I'm not going to touch the finish at this point. Just bolt-ons.
I'm all ears...
