Double Bass 8" speakers for upright?

To answer your subwoofer question. The Pub 2/280 by itself is plenty enough. I have never tried the Pub 1/380 but everyone who has tried it has said it doesn't add much at all and in fact they all agree it would be better to have two Pub 2/280s if you want more output. Monte has exactly that setup.

I would see little point in using the Pub in combination with a Contra. Might as well just use it instead. It's really a different kind of sound.

The following is from a bass player online review of the iamp 350 combo:
'The iAMP combo uses a 350-watt Kevlar-impregnated coaxial Eminence 10
(custom-made to Euphonic's specs) and a 150-watt PA-grade Pyramid tweeter with a titanium diaphragm. The tweeter fires directly through a flared throat hidden beneath the woofer's dust cap.'

It is my understanding that all EA speakers are made by eminence but to EA's spec. I think they are basically customised eminence PA drivers (as are Raezers Edge drivers).

What are the external dimensions of your 208? Could you send me any photos please?
The VL-208 is 18.5" H by 17.5" W by 13.5" D and weighs 48 lbs. It is rated at 40Hz to 15kHz, and can handle 400 watts. Here is a shot of 3 VL-208's and a VL-110 powered by my iAMP 800:

Here is a shot giving you some perspective, with three VL-208's, two VL-210's and a CX-310:

I am designing my own cabnet and am focusing on 8" speakers, I always was a beleiver in the more "Rapid" speedyness off the response I get from a series of small speakers versus on BIG one, the acoustic nature of an upright bass has a natural delay in the swelling "Ploom" just after picking the note, I don't want my amp adding more sluggishness to that ploom as in a lazy 15" speaker that has more MASS to move to produce the "WOOOOMPH" hence my forum name :-) My Livingroom sub woofers are twin 8" Kenwoods and my Bass sounds killer using that system for a booster amp when I jam at home with a small PA for vocals and sound enhencement but the woooomph does NOT over power my top end when I bow or Pizz.[spelling sorry].

I just emailed Don at LDS asking if he could build me a 2x8 with a 5 1/4 midrage speaker. He said he can do it! So i might just order one :p

Interesting. How are you designing yours? I have a couple of things I might try. I may go for a ported design like a baby blue monitor or possibly try an EA style transmission line design, although these seem pretty hard to get right. Ive built a 10 inch one already and spent hours just moving bits of wadding around!

I also really like 8s for upright and I agree the VL208 is the best I've heard for it. I recently called Don at LDS to make me a 4ohm 208 cab to use with my Clarus head. I'll let folks know how it sounds when I get it. Those VL208s are getting a lot harder to find and as great as they sound, they are pretty inefficient with the Clarus.

I've been using my SWR Baby Blue combo fitted with two original speakers (not the newer Celestions). Its heavier and bigger than my GK combo, but is way better. Its a good doubling amp as it sounds great with Double bass and bass guitar. The 2 x 8 seems to give enough clarity and bottom at the same time for both instruments. I use the pre amp set flat for both, and just roll off or add some bass depending on the room. I am sure the cab would work well with a Clarus, but it isn't light to carry.
