Notice how they deleted the front pickup trying to get the assembly strong enough for a set neck!

Dang! It makes me want to order one up and add a mudbucker in between the end of the fingerboard and the bridge pu.

going to find a gutted neck through with a 2 by headstock and use that as a base for this bass...thoughts?

The Aria Pro SB basses come to mind, for no particular reason, other than their spacious headstock and generally favorable reviews.

That's actually an excellent idea By @ctmullins , very well made neck through bass with a HUGE headstock. They seem to be popular again, I always wanted one back in the Day. Kind of a "budget Alembic" vibe going.

Aria was my first "got to" idea actually...the only problem is that I love them and I don't want to mess up a perfectly good one...so I'm going to look for a "project Aria" with the right headstock

I used to play Aria SBs exclusively before I switched to mostly Fender. Fantastic basses, my taste just kind of changed. First one I picked was for about $200...sold it for a grand a couple of years ago.
