8-string pickups

I am in the planning stages of building an 8-string bass. Anyone out there have experience with pickups that cover the wide tonal range that the octave strings will produce? I am looking for a tone almost "piano-like". Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Rick,

Here's some spec.'s on the Schecter Studio 8 that I was possesed enough to buy. I took the risk of buying before I tried it and have absolutely No Regrets. It's freakin' awesome, really takes one to another place whilst playing!!! A while back I had a seriuosly bad jones for coping some of Jonsey's stuff (Achilles Last Stand) and even though I'll forever suck (to me) as a bass player, this Studio 8 certainly got me the sound I sought. Your "Piano" tone you seek is all there IMO. Oh yeah, your answer to your questions. They use EMG "HZ's" in an 3 band EQ active arrangement, I was told that it was unusual to use "HZ's" in an active config. but all I know is that the damn things sure to kick it righteous. IMO Schecter makes an awesome 8 String for the price, it took some new strings and some set up tweaking but it was worth the dough for me. I got it "special order" through GC, Schecter had them in stock at the factory (CA), but it still took awhile, never really found out why (cheaper freight, Customer can wait?). You could always order one, make sure GC makes good on the Schecter factory set up, be warned, she may have major fret buzz (she has jumbos), a little string to string rattles is okay, but I can't stand what I call "sustained fret or even open string fret buzz" and I hate to say it but GC is notorious IMO for not bothering to check factory or to do proper set ups on almost everything they get in...it's a shame. Anyways, I myself would have a hard time making a pinewood derby let alone a bass, so more power to you. Sorry for all the words.

Hope this helps
