The controls are volume, treble, and bass. The switch turn on an onboard preamp which engages the bass control.

In passive it runs as a standard P with volume and treble the bass knobs is out of the circuit so does nothing passive.

In the active mode you get a =/- 15 db bass boost or cut via the now live bass control and the treble switches from a cut only to a boost cut. The treble has a center detent in it.

Tried other "active" Fenders and none top this thing. Heavy at about 12 lbs though. :bawl:

I've got an '82. My uncle was the original owner and it was the house bass for a club for 20yrs, which is why it really yellowed down. He gave it me when he quit playing.

While it does get pretty loud with the active boost, I really prefer it left in passive mode...it's got a nice rich sound.

I had no idea there were so many of them out there. I have a red one like the one in the pictures that I got off E-Bay. I have other Fender basses (Im hooked) but I play out every weekend and once I played this thing out I was blown away. The only thing that sounds close is my 5 String American Delux Ash Precision. Like I said Im hooked Im waiting on a 81 Lake Placid Blue precision special that I got on G Bass, hope it sounds just as good. Thanks all for the input

Mine is an '82 walnut version. I must have gotten lucky because mine only weighs around 10 lbs. I replaced the stock pickup with a Seymour Duncan 1/4 lbr. This is my main playing bass, awesome!

I agree the only thing I have that sounds close is my 5 string American Deluxe Precision Ash. Liked it so much I have another one on the way that I got off G bass. Its Lake Placid Blue. My red one looks as if it has gold paint under the red so I thought it may have been refinished but the finish looks just like yours. does it have gold under Red Paint?

The Candy apple red paint is transparent red. The gold is the base coat that give the color depth. Silve metallic is also used in Candy Colors but I think the Gold base coat gives the color a deeper look.
