83 FENDER WALNUT ELITE II P-BASS?

Interesting bass on my local CL this morning. Looks like a little something different from most of the Fenders I've ever seen. Gold finished stuff isn't really my thing, but looks pretty cool with the dark walnut and ebony.

I also dunno about $5-Large for it...

These are very cool instruments, and I've long wished I'd snapped one up brand new while they were still in production (yes, I remember the early 80s very vividly).

But no way is this one worth five grand. No way...

Don't know about the price but that particular model, wood and finish was only made for one year. So, it is indeed rare.

i know i'm not bringing anything new to the table, but i just have to say the same thing.. these basses; specifically in walnut..HAWT. just not 5 grand hawt...

I was working for a Fender retailer in the mid-1980s, and when Fender discontinued the Elite line I was able to buy a brand new Elite Precision II at dealer cost.

I kept that bass for 15 years. It was nice. Not great; if I'd paid retail for it (which at the time was $795) I'd probably think I just about got my money's worth. For $200 I definitely got my money's worth!

But $5,000?!?!? No chance in hell that bass could ever be worth $5k ...unless it came complete with a reacharound from Charlize Theron.

I've got an '84 P Elite II. I LOVE mine. Weighs a ton, and the neck is kind of beefy. But, it sounds awesome. The walnut ones in excellent shape typically go for about 1800-2000. In showroom condition, I was thinking the 2500 range.
