There’s nothing wrong with that line, that’s the bridge, it’s all in E minor(until it resolves to C at the end, as a set up to go back to G7)and all the notes are in that scale(B,A,G,Gb,D,E). He might have flubbed a note at some point, but who cares? It’s classic garage rock.

Incredibly, 96 Tears made it to #1 on the charts, a million copies and a gold record.

It sounds off to me, and I think might be because his bass is not very well intonated.

As was a lot of bass in the 60’s, especially if it was a short scale with a fixed bridge (Gibson/Epiphone, for example). Plus, I don’t think most players were conscious of that kind of stuff back then. I wasn’t, and I started out on an original ‘60 slab body EB-0.
I checked out that run again, it’s actually B,A,Ab,G,D(maybe Gb),E, a chromatic thing not unlike a lot of ‘wrong’ notes in blues, and no worse than the “Dazed And Confused” riff. Screw the rules, it’s rock and roll.

Of course, that depends on how we're defining old folks.

Over 60?
Practically dead?

And then there's the undisputed fact that as bass players, we're inherently more stable and mature than anybody else., irrespective of age.

Also, in this particular instance, ignoring all the clowns who couldn't resist trying to cloud the issue by adding other options, it's down to Duck Dunn vs whoever the heck is playing on the other song. I'm pretty amazed Wilson's song wasn't a lot more popular.

i thought wilson's 634-5789 would be the runaway winner --- not so much based on age, but rather the idea that it's a soulful R&B tune with a deep pocket/groove. i'm seeing the poll results as: more rockers than soul/R&B-ers.

i'm surprised with the results so far (and TBH: a little disappointed). i wonder if i could make the argument that the results are "rigged!"
