Not that it's an excuse, but go on any of Jersey's main highways (Parkway, NJ Turnpike, Rts. 80, 78, 287, etc) and hardly anybody drives at less than 80. The way they drive there means if you're not keeping up with the traffic, you're driving dangerously (there's a good reason why NJ has the second highest car insurance in the country).
As somewhat of an insider, I would say it has more to do with the huge amount of fraud going on, but that's another story. However, I agree that our poor driving certainly doesn't help.
Just today I did a bunch of... ehh, not so much illegal, but 'jerk' moves in traffic. That sort of thing is commonplace in Jersey, but probably wouldn't be appreciated in, say, Wyoming. I try to keep my speed below 75, but even then I'm still speeding in the right lane (limit 65) as cars fly by doing 80+ in the left.
I'm really not surprised that he was going 91 MPH, as that is pretty normal for the left lane on the GSP. It may be urban legend, but I've heard that cops won't even pull you over on the GSP/TP unless you're doing over 85 MPH.
The only dumb part about this whole incident is that the GOVERNOR had to rush to meet... Imus and some 'nappy haired hos' (
). If I were him I'd either show up late or cancel it... seriously, doesn't Corzine have better things to do? So Imus said something that's kinda racist/sexist, what is Corzine going to do?
As for his recovery, he's probably screwed. These types of accidents take years to make even a partial recovery. The fact that he was in the front passenger seat makes it even worse, because that is the most dangerous part of a car. If the airbag went off and he wasn't wearing a seatbelt, he'll also have severe lower body injuries. For example, in a front end collision with a brick wall, the femurs would be pushed back into the pelvis, breaking both hips and smashing the sciatic nerves. Such injuries were common when airbags first came out, because people thought that seatbelts weren't necessary. I have a family friend whose legs sustained major permanent damage from such an accident.
