To me, a memorable bassline is not necessarily one that is flashy, in your face, and an exhibition of skill and grandiosity - but more subtle, yet holding up the entire song. Wilton Felder also plays on Seals And Crofts' Maj7 masterpeice "We May Never Pass This Way Again". It's a current anthem for me.

I have two. My own that I call the "Renaissance" scale because played stepwise ascending and descending it sounds like a Jon Camp/Renaissance classic. It's essentially a Major scale started on the minor 7th. It works with virtually all jazz since the late 40's.

The other is HRH Sir Paul "Big Macca" McCartney's "Silly Love Songs". Greatest bass line ever! The song's chord pattern is the same as John Lennon's "Imagine" (c'mon Paul, you knew what you were doing!) and that silliest of Beatle influenced love songs, Clapton's "Layla" (outro). You can play "SLS" bass part--modified--under the "Layla" chords. And bassist-singers let's not for get that monster lyrical tenor "A" at "...love isn't silly at *A-A-A-ALL*!"
