OK, remember that Yamaha TRB5-PII we discussed? Well, here it is. For me, first furniture bass (ovankol over ash), first neck-through, first piezo pickups, first Yamaha. Now I play and sound like my MAIN man, Nathan East. I know, he plays BBs, but they're Yamaha pickups. Got the Gumby headstock, too. Plays and sounds like butter.

Wow, I haven't seen that model yet; looks like Yamaha is joining the fancy-pants club ;) Very nice.

So Munji, did you come up with a long-lost child to sell in order to buy it (last I read that was your only shot at getting it)?

Nah..they're just appreciative of him because he intimidates all the other customers into buying some Eden gear. Even the drum and keyboard customers.

I'm back up to nine. I sold my only four-string to a friend two weeks ago.

Now, on that black bass thing, that Zon I got last year is close enogh, although I did play one of those Fender Jazz Bass thingies today, you know, that new line. Mexican I think, but a nice bass for about $600. Jazz body, cream binding on the body, chrome smooth knobs, no pickguard. That'd do if it was a five-string.

Anyway, back to this Yammer. I wasn't even going to buy it ... I went in just to ask for a ballpark price on it (this was not my buddies at GC ... it's a local store). I got a kid for a salesman, which I didn't want, but at least he knew what I was talking about. So he looked it up, and quoted me a price WELL below 50% of list. Well, his boss was standing there doing something else, and I didn't want to get into one of those "Ooops! I was looking at the wrong bass" things. So I said, "You're looking at the wrong bass." Nope, nope ... his boss comes over, looks at it and says, "No, it's the right one," and sends the kid over to get it. Sure enough, he brings back the right one. Now smelling blood, but still not wanting to end up in a fiasco, I said, "Are you SURE you guys want to sell it to me for that?" "Yep ... that's the price." So I picked it up for $1,200 LESS than the discount price I found on the web.

I've had a chance to play it for a little while, so here are some observations:

1. Got sustain. About a half hour if you want it. Must be the neck-through.

2. With the piezo pickup, a little dab'll do ya. I mean a LITTLE. Like a 32nd of a turn. It adds overtones (highs) like a fiend, but really brings out the sound of the wood. Any more than that, and you're going to have that Fieldy-esque clicky thing going.

3. It has a very broad range of tones, from growly bluesy to smooth, smiley jazz.

4. Fit and finish equal to or better than Lakland 55-94. Just beautiful work. I haven't had a chance to look inside its cavities yet. (nyuk nyuk nyuk)

5. I played it at the store through a Fender Bassman 60 ... a 112 combo. Boy was I surprised. It sounded very good to my ears. I'm going to have to move Fender up a few notches in my hierarchy of desireable amps.

6. At this moment, mamacita is blissful in ignorance. She'll be home soon.
