A case for every bass

I used to only have hard cases, now I only have gig bags. At home, the bags keep the dust off the basses and make them easy to move from place to place. But I never stack or pack my basses. I always move my own gear; for my current gig we all drive separately so the basses are in the front seat with me.

My new favorite thing: double gig bags. I have two of them. They are great, even if you are only taking one bass to the gig. But it's cool to take 2. Break a string--why bother changing it at the gig: just use the other bass.

I prefer manufacturer-branded model-specific cases which have a snug body fit. However, I refuse to spend more than 30% of the value of a bass towards a HSC. So, out of 14 total:

• 8 (57%) have manufacturer brand HSC
• 2 (14%) have aftermarket brand HSC
• 4 (29%) have gig-bags only

All my HSC instruments contain a strap, instrument cable, and tuner inside, making them "grab and go" ready.

Are there any threads reviewing cases specifically? I would like to add some reviews for several of my cases. A few have held up much better than others.

Some basses have been a challenge. My G&L Tribute L-2000 right now is stuck in a poor-fitting aftermarket SKB case, because the G&L-specific HSC sells for about $180, which surpasses my "percentage value" threshold.

Hard case for each. And that's the way they are stored, because...well...I live on a fault line.

That may partially explain my attitude as well, having spent half my adult life in Northern California. A lot of stuff moved around in my studio during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Nothing got broken, but one instrument in its case fell and barely missed a guitar that was out on a stand, and for years after that, I was meticulous about keeping axes in closed hardshell cases whenever they weren't actively being played. I've gotten lazy about that in recent years, but I still like keeping 'em protected, even at home.

I`m a hard case,doll,a real hard case. *Bogart voice* Have to agree on this. I mainly purchased a Rouge SX bass + SKB lightly used case for $100. Rouge was nice,but ended up giving it to my daughter`s bf.

Advice please. Having a hard time(sorry) finding hsc for my Squier VM Mustang online.Interior cavity dimensions. Thanks!

Just curious ... Do you have a case for every bass you own? Do you buy the manufacturers case or something else?

No and No.

I only have two "proprietary" cases: The original gigbag that my Steinberger L-2 came in, and an Anvil ATA flight case that was custom built for my Modulus.

Every other case or gigbag I own was bought with the explicit ability to accommodate several of my basses. I have one rectangular hardshell case that can fit almost all of my basses (except the Steinberger of course), one formfit hardshell case that can fit three different ones, and four gigbags that can take any of the instruments. Which case I use often depends simply on whichever case that instrument was last put away in!

Hate bags, love all 18 hard cases with a bass inside every one of them.

I think it's the only way to store them if they are out of the current playing rotation.

Cases stack so well ---- bags just flop around, slip, slide and fall over all the time
