A Christmas Eve Story

I used to play with a church band for many years. I dropped out of the band a few years ago for various reasons (big time commitment, long-distance driving, etc.) I am now their on-call bass player when the existing bass player is sick or is out of town. I substituted for the bass player "Sally" a few weeks ago. They invited me to sing at the Christmas Eve service. I thought it would be fun to just sing and let someone else play bass.

Christmas Eve arrives; we set up, do a quick sound check, and start playing songs while people are filing into the church. I was singing and generally enjoying myself. About 1/3 of the way through the church service Sally turns to me and says that the smell of the candles and pine trees is upsetting her allergies and giving her a bad headache. She then hands me her bass, and she leaves the sanctuary.

I knew the songs but had not played them in a year or more. To make matters worse, she plays a short-scale bass with very low action and a high strap. So I nervously put the bass on and tried my best. I think I did pretty well after the first song and getting used to her bass. The worship leader was very happy that I could just step in since the only instruments we had that night were bass, guitar, and drums.

Wowza...maybe she should throw an Advil bottle or Excedrin in her gig bag? Saline nasal rinse with eucalyptus or something usually helps when I get allergy triggers.

I'm gonna venture out and say she hasn't done too many gigs with a hangover :roflmao:
