so .. i have about no more than a grand to spend on a fender, 4 or 5 strings are fine. Which would you suggest best? I just want something that has fender characteristics in the tone. So far people have suggested Geddy Lee's .. any other takers? some deluxes? highway 1?

of course.. im open to other brand too, this will my back up bass or simply for practice and small studio thingy..

if you like the geddy id say grab one of those before they go extinct. otherwise id say go to stores and play any and every bass in and around your price range. you seem to be open to anything so just get out there and play everything.
