Double Bass A flatback Deal

Hi guys,

First of let me say I live in Cyprus, and in the whole country there's maybe 10 double basses to try. We don't have bass luthiers, and we don't have bass shops.

Now, an old teacher of mine has bought 4-5 basses in the past from czech and hungary. He is selling one of them. I played all of his basses yesterday, and to be honest the one he is selling, I liked the best. Now I haven't played on many basses so I don't know what to compare it too. The sound of this bass was definitely a little on the bright side but it had corelli steel strings. I like a darker sound, for Jazz. But I guess with guts I can get that sound in the end. The bass has a lot of sustain, plays in tune throughout the fingerboard. But what really excited me is how much the D & G strings sing! They sing so beautifully throughout the whole range!

The bass is all wood, no ply. And it's a flatback. It has a loud clear sound, with good projection even in the higher register. However the open E was kind of twangy, but that could be the corelli string? The price he is asking for is 4500 euro. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to find another bass like this at this price + be able to ship it back safely to my country. But I could be wrong, and since I don't have much experience I thought I ask on these forums. Also, the bass was previously cracked at the back where the neck meets the body (behind the thumb position area). It looks like it has had a good restoration (it's an old bass). My teacher is a good person, so I don't think he would cheat me into anything. However, when I checked through the F-hole I couldn't see any brand marks. Is that a bad sign?

I also uploaded 2 photos. I know they're not the best angles but that's all I got.
Thank you for any help guys, I really want this bass I'm just not sure if I can spend this money right now, and if this is a good investment. Sound-wise it definitely made me really happy, except that it was a little too bright and I'm hoping with guts that will go away.

Thanks again,
Greg

Hello Greg,

I think you have a no brainer here:
  • You love how this bass sounds and plays (Minor adjustments can be had with different strings).
  • You trust the person that is selling it to you.
  • The price is good for an old fully carved bass in good condition.
  • Add the non existent bass market in your country and how expensive can be to travel abroad to get a bass and then shipping cost, customs,...
Many great basses have no labels inside, don't worry about it.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Thanks man! Here are some photos I took this morning. You can also see where it was damaged previously.

I was up playing it all night. The pizz sound is everything I ever wanted from a bass. The only thing bothering me a little is the low E not having enough bottom and wood sound. But it must be the strings. I will slap on some guts soon and see how it is. Gonna need a new bridge though, the action is kind of low.

Action:
E string: 10mm
A string: 8mm
D string: 7mm
G string: 5mm

The D & G are too low for me.
