A foreign experience

I recently played a song that did not have English lyrics, not written in the style we are more familiar with in this part of the world and it was incredible.

It is written in Hebrew, middle eastern scales and very moving.

So that is my question; have you ever played a song from another culture that is totally foreign to you?
(Pun intended)

To me this has opened a new direction in study/playing.

Playing Hebrew songs is much of what I do, so they're not foreign to me. What has challenged me is music from Balkan countries. Unexpected chord changes and time changes.

I spent 5 years in a Slasa band, and the deep dive into Afro-Cuban musical traditions advanced me musically in a variety of ways. We played a Jewish weeding and has to bust Hava Nagila while they hoisted the bride up in a chair, It was one of the more fun gigs.
