A guy that realy CAN give Wooten a run.

This guy has a great technique, flashy playing, etc. But he doesn't touch me at all, when Wooten talk to my soul.
Why the obsession of bass players that are ,in the posters opinion."better that Wooten"? Who really cares about who is supposedly better?
+1, I'm a longtime fan of both of these players and I've never thought of it as who is the better player. Maybe it's my age, but I don't get this death-cage-match mentality of rating players, just listen to music that touches you.
But how about that stack of Roland 410 Combos? I've never seen those, only the 210 and 115. I bet those weigh a ton and a half.

Hell at 5 min in he takes a pretty killin' solo. The song in general is pretty darn complicated.
The short answer is Alain doesn't appear often in the US. It is not like he is unknown or not admired & respected here.

He is the consummate player. Even Wooten regularly forgets it's about music and goes off on 10 minute clicking masturbation excursions. That stuff is for noobs. Technique, techshmeek, none of these chops monsters can hold a candle to even the most rudimentary player that digs in with soul. That's where Oteil wins, IMO. The rest of the whole lot seem more impressed by their own skillz than they are impressed by music. I thought we left music based on how much lickety crap you can memorize back in the 70s.

Fine player! The music lacks substance and harmonic interest (for me) Can not deny his technique and mastery of the thing he does. I don't care for his fretless tone his intonation is suspect.
I'm wondering the same thing. Is there some kind of contest going on to see who can "beat" Victor on bass? It's like some weird rockband video game mentality working its way into the real world. Creepy.
Alain and Victor are both crazy good players who have their own individual styles.
They both use a similar right hand technique for slap. They both slap down and also pull up with the thumb to get that fast thump. I saw Alain last year at the NAMM show and again in Oct at his BPL clinic. His fretless playing is beautiful.
Alain can definitely stand up there with the biggest and baddest. Vic included. The thing is though, Vic is absolutely not untouchable. Tons of cats can "give him a run for his money"
Sure I did. My point was that Alain came up with it- it's HIS thing as far as I'm concerned. Anyway the first guy copied Alain pretty well, but the second guy ain't happening at all. At all. No time, no groove.
Hmmm.....some Caron clones coming out of the woodworks............solo wasn't that great though.

My point is....yeah, I think Wooten could do this if he wanted. On another note, there are some freaky talented bassists out there with the skills that can match or even supercede many of the well known bassists out there! This cat Will Karling also plays drums!! Talented!
