I didnt realy intend the thread as a cage match betwee wooten and Caron fans. Its just that so many bassists think that Vic is the unquestional best bar none to even question it is blasphamy yada yada etc... Which is a crock of BS. As well comparing anyone to Wooten is a surefire way to get people to check out the thread, people seem to do it all the time regardless of if the bass player is even close to wootens level just to generate some buzz, which I admit was my intent. I enjoy them both as well as many others, Caron is my personal favorite though.

Oteil is great and like Victor, is a very nice guy. Check out his playing on the live ABB DVD that came out a couple of years ago. It's close to three hours of watching him tear it up. He grooves so hard it's really incredible.

Well me personally, I like both bassists. I hope my posts didn't dictate that I didn't dig Caron. I have all his (and Wootens) cd's. I just think Wooten could cover more ground musically and is more versatile! If I had a funk, latin or reggae gig and I needed to choose between the both of them to cover the gig, Wooten would get the call! You think Caron could cover the Bela Fleck gig?

As for those Wooten cover vids....seen 'em all. There are a million Wooten clones! My purpose of finding Caron cover vids was because some folks didn't think his style of playing was copyable (hell, me included)!

We all draw from personal experiences, and most people have a story about the experiences that shape their opinion and preference. I find that the stories are much more enjoyable than the sales pitch of what/who is "better".

I think I like Caron best just cause the he was the very first realy good bass player I ever heard. I was introduced to Uzeb at the ripe age of 14, I was still in my slaughtering nirvana songs on the worlds crappyest guitar phase and they just blew me away. They were one of the influences that kept driving me to get better and write more creative music rather than just jamming Nickle Back and Green Day covers. Ever since then Caron has pretty much been my yardstick for "best bassist" and he's a pretty long yardstick.

The thing I think he does better than anyone else is the way he can so precicely be just a little bit inacurate on a fretless and slur into or out of notes just the smallest amount with just the perfect touch so it almost sounds like a saxaphone, to me this is the Caron style and not his slapping, I have yet to hear anyone do this as well as he can.

Completely agree. I have their first live disk, which is one of my most treasured albums. And I really need to get my hands on Mirrors of Embarrassment. I think it's long been out of print. I'm kicking myself for not picking it up when I had the chance.

Also, Jimmy Herring is one of my favorite guitar players. Most of my faves are the hollow-body jazz guitarists, but Jimmy Herring is my favorite solid-body guitarist.

And don't forget Matt Mundy! Whatever happened to him?

Hey, Caron and Wooten have each paid their dues! Not that I am a Caron connoisseur, but what I have heard Alain play is nothing short of fantastic.

As a previous poster said, copying these guys is a heck of a lot easier than pioneering a spot in the bass archives as both of these cats obviously have!

To each his own. :D
