A little help please.

Hello all.

First post here so go easy on me!!

I just got me a 76 Rickenbacker and i love it to bits. Just one problem, after replacing the horrible fat strings that were on it with my prefered slimmer stings i've noticed that my E string sits loosely in the nut. This is causing me real problems getting the string tuned. Is there any way of padding out or filling the nut as I would rather not replace the original nut if it can be avoided.

Many thanks

Slim

P.S. Sorry if i've posted this in the wrong section!!

I'm not sure about any padding techniques, but you can absolutely get the nut filled using different techniques.

If you are pretty confident you won't go back to those fat strings, you could get a good luthier to fill the nut slots and re-file them to your slim string specs (process is much like the composite used in dental fillings).

Also replacing the nut isn't the end of the world if necessary, although finding the correct dimensioned nut for a 4001 could be tricky.

In the meantime a little graphite in the nut slots may help with any tuning issues.

Hope this helps. Welcome to the forums! :)

Graphite in the slots. Or you could have a bone nut made for pretty cheap. No biggy about the original. Just keep up with it and put it back on if you ever get ready to sell it. Welcome to the forum!
