A Little Perspective...

Link Removed

Check it out.

cheers

On the other hand the earth is such a tiny piece of a spec in a seemingly infinite expanse and each one of us is such a micro part of the planet. Then our significance is so small it's unquantifiable therefore what we do is so small it's unquantifiable. So who gives a crap what any of us do? Why should we try to preserve something so insignificant if it's occurrence and subsequent disappearance won't even register as a blip on the radar of the grand scheme of things.

I hate it when the internet sites try to teach us morals and other assorted BS

That's taking it to the other extreme...stay in the middle...

That was my point. What I've said above doesn't accurately represent my own personal out look. I was being purposefully antagonistic. I've come across stuff like this before (usually in the form forwarded emails) stuff that's meant to make some deep meaningful impact and change your whole out look, but at the end of the day it's just some twee saccharine coat BS that's not as clever or witty or meaningful as the author would have you think.

My antagonism was to point out that the same reasoning can be used to come to a polar opposite conclusion as the original. Highlighting my opinion that it's just more BS on the internet really.

This is true. And I definitely don't buy everything I read on the internet...but my intention was to offer "A Little Perspective"...not trying to change anyone's life. Just encouraging people to take a step back now and then...that's all.

Creepy.

I never took the time to look around the rest of the site. A former colleague (a chemistry teacher) just emailed my the direct link for that page and I bookmarked it.

I certainly don't want to seem like I'm endorsing any of that other nonsense.

I kinda thought that. From what I've seen of your posts, you seem pretty level-headed.

Thanks, and right back at you about being level-headed. Even when I don't share the same opinion as you on issues, I like reading your posts because I think you express your ideas well and in convincing fashion.

Back to the topic of the thread, here's an interesting comparison that I would make to my students when discussing measurements and orders of magnitude.

Roughly speaking, the diameter of an atom is around 10^-10 m. The diameter of an average star is about 10^10 m. Humans are on the order of 10^0 m tall. So in terms of size, we stand right between atoms and stars.

As I think louieeadg was trying to point out, it's about knowing where you stand. Often in life it's about seeing the big picture, but sometimes it is about the smallest details. It's important to know what perspective suits you best at any given time.
