A new and improved "ignore" feature

First - for those who are sure to have issue with a simple suggestion - I am not unhappy with the current state of Talkbass. I am certain that this is best forum on the internet. For real. From time to time I have a thought regarding something I think might make it even better! When I do, I offer it here in the SUGGESTION BOX.

Here is my suggestions:

Would it be possible to implement an ignore feature that totally ignores people? The current feature shows a post that there is ignored content. While I thought I was alone with this, I'm finding from various posts that I'm not. Those messages for some make it even harder to not look at what that person has posted . Yes, I know - that's my problem, but as just stated - others also.

Anyhow, is a complete ignore function possible? I realize that would make for some confusing threads at times, but if its through our own choosing, well... yeah. Could be offered as an option on the ignore function too - make posts invisible, or invisible with notice.

And we're off.... !!!!

I'm actually doing the same. It feels like exercise . I see a post by a person I'd otherwise ignore, take a breath, form an image of the person I imagine to be behind the keypad, smile - and move onto the next post.

I have to admit though that it's challenging at times, especially when I have a perfect response to the comment . Definitely getting much better at it though.

I think that if you are that off put by the simple sight of another poster's handle and content you have bigger issues than the ignore list on TB. Honestly, most people that use the ignore list here do so over simple disagreements and not legitimate harassment. People are always very vocal when they add somebody to their ever-growing ignore list. This leads me to believe seeing the content is not the real issue anyway.

Honestly, I have had some not-so-friendly debates here in the past. But I try my best to forget who it was I debated and got upset with. Why? Because I might learn something from that guy down the road.

So, I might have had a cyber argument with you one day, and like something you posted the next day and not even realize you're the same guy. I recognize about a dozen avatars but that's about it.

I ignore one guy. And that's because his avatar is so political in nature that I just KNOW he wants to pick a fight. And, these days I am trying to do better about walking away. Obviously I slip up from time to time. But I'm trying.

The point is, I try to forgive and forget. Heck, @bolophonic and I hardly agree in anything. But I know he's honest and I like his take on things. If I ignored him because we see things differently I would be missing out.

Sure, there are trolls here. Let 'em troll. They won't last long here anyway. Heck, they're kind of funny in that theu think we don't know they are trolling. It's good to a giggle now and then.

All that being said, it seems Joe is trying to help. And that's almost never a bad thing.

When TB allowed for political threads, it got contentious. To a point where I disliked a number of those where the threads got personal. It's been a decade or more since politics has been banned, a few of those members still post here and I'll still read their replies regarding other subjects. Trying to keep an open mind.

FYI: I have only put one TB member on my ignore list. Not because of anything posted here. Actually, that member is highly regarded or at least a bit of a fan favorite on TalkBass.

The reason is that their replies in another Internet forum where I posted skipped any attempt at argument or conversation and went right to personal insults. Blocked there too.

It's better that way.

As a suggestion, a "hide all traces of input from this user" feature would not be a bad idea as an option. The problem with it is that in threads, other people may quote that person when replying, and even when they don't their replies to that person would seem completely out of context if the post they were replying to just completely disappeared. I don't think there's any way for the software to hide quotes, or even change the username on quotes.

I say we do this, but only if we start a thread where you list who you've blocked,why you've blocked them, and for how long. You know, for educational purposes.

Hahaha. I want to start a "who is on your ignore list" thread where sensible people can easily confirm with other known sensible people that "no, its not me, that guy really is an a hole" but there is no way TB would accept that thread for obvious reasons that I can't mention lest I be banned.

On the other end of the spectrum from you, I occasionally search for posts from my ignore list just to make sure the offenders are still a holes. They always still are. However, I never reply and they never get into my head. Maybe you just need to go off on one of these a holes for once, take your ban for a while, and then you will have learned that they aren't even worth letting into your head. I'm so tempted to name names here.... haha. Feel free to vent PM. I'm sure if your fair-minded self despises em then most everybody else does but still the despised still remain. The world is unfair and TB is part of the world so... I'm guessing that these guys have been found to be great click-bait so they remain.

It is true that people ignore others for less than harassment but if your measure of ban-worthy is "harassment" and above then you just see things differently from a LOT of people. I don't have numbers to justify that claim but you dont have numbers to jistify yours either so we're even.

The few people I have blocked have been blocked due to their almost constant lousy attitudes, negativity towards anybody who isn't a washed up old man like he himself is, unjustified pomposity and the like. Guess what, they are usually blocked by me due to their treatment of others rather than their treatment of me. I'm no snowflake. The problem is that too often the person replying to the troll gets the ban so the logical one is silenced. So, for some, its best to not even be tempted.

Yes, it might be an issue to be compelled to call out a troll but some of us don't understand why trolls do what they do, the little twits behind a keyboard. You cant really argue with their overy-simplistic views and there lack of logic. Now... In an alley, in real life a punk flaps his lips it would certainly be different, diablo, so don't think too highly of trolls and too lowly of those who can be irked by them, diablo. You're a funny guy, diablo.

In short, someone doesn't have an "issue" just because they can't stand hypocrisy, arrogance, general crotchetiness, especially since TB frowns on letting us call those people out, diablo. Enjoy your troll day.

Surely you must see some irony in your post. You block people for negativity, I totally get that, but you peppered your post with insults. Additionally, if your reply to a "troll" actually warrants moderation then one would have to question the positive content in your own posts. I have called out several trolls and have never once been modified for doing so. The solution to negativity is not more negativity. Spread love.

I know this is an old post but would like to revive it because I've been looking for the same functionality recently - albeit for slightly different reasons.

Sure, there are TB users who spew constant bile and cynicism, and that would be nice to block, but I'd actually like to be able to filter all of TBs content to just focus on my specific interests.

For example, I'd like to filter out entire threads - maybe even entire forums - from my experience.

If possible, I'd like to never see a NBD post or anything in "Bass Guitars", simply because I don't want to be tempted to buy new gear.

The greatest benefits I've gotten from TalkBass are in the music theory (General Instruction) and recording techniques sections. Lots of very knowledgeable folks there who are willing to help out with actually becoming better at playing and reading music (which is kinda the whole point). If I could limit my content to just that, I'd not only end up being a better, happier musician, but my wallet would thank me as well. Just a thought.

In another thought, if TalkBass offered an API to access its data, it would be possible to build your own app that acts as a filtering system to control the content yourself.

You guys can block specific forums. I block classifieds. I dont remember how to do it, but the option is there. Check in settings and preferences.

To block entire forums from new posts searches, go to your profile, then on the left, click on "settings". Down near the bottom of the list is a link called "ignore new posts". In the next window, click all the boxes of forums you do NOT want to see results from when you click on "New Posts". It's a really great feature.
