Very nice and very interesting! I'm looking forward to seeing how the color develops with each coat.
Yeah, I'll go a bit darker with it. I've got to sand off the fuzzy bits that the water in the dye brought up first, then it's getting more. For a first coat, it's not bad though. It went on pretty evenly too which is a plus as I hear dyes can sometimes be blotchy looking.

As for what I'm using to apply the dye, I've gone high tech and am using those blue "shop towels". Not sure if you can get them in Greece. Basically a thick paper towel. Maybe not the best way to do it but they seem to work well.

I know them well. Before moving to Greece, for a short while I had a motorcycle shop in NY, and those blue shop towels were one of my best friends
I asked because the finish is so even, I assumed it was brushed on. I'm impressed that it looks so good and not splotchy given you're using shop towels.
Again, you make it look so easy.
For instance, if I was posting pics of me building a bass it would read something like:
"This first pic is of me cussing my head off because I cut too deep when cutting out the fret board".
"This next pic is when I kicked over the bucket of dye I'm using to color the wood, and got it all over the floor and everything else".
hahahha.

Thanks for the kind words GKon. I appreciate it very much. This is my first time doing anything besides an oil finish so I'm flying by the seat of my pants here...kind of.
Anyway, I have got some more work done on this bass. I put two coats of dye on it to get the color I wanted. It's really red. Then I took it out and hung it up and sprayed the whole thing with shellac to seal it.
Then last night, I busted out the pore filler. I dyed it black and went to town making a big old mess. In the end, it came out looking like this.
I've got to sand it some more, then I'll seal the whole thing again with shellac. After that, it's on to the clear coats and watch the paint dry for a couple of weeks.

I saw the pic of the red bass and thought to myself, "man, that would look mighty fine if the grain had been more pronounced." I was not disappointed after I kept scrolling. That looks great!

My honest opinion is that you should have done the whole back red instead of leaving the strip in the middle.
I won't lie to you. I honestly thought about that after I took the tape off but didn't want to screw it up and not be able to match the color or have some other weird thing happen. It's ok though, I'm still quite happy with it and it does look better in person than what the pictures show. There is always a next time though and I'm always taking notes for that one.
The finish on this bass is done and I got it assembled last night and made the nut this morning. All that's left is the wiring and a setup. I'll get to that tomorrow night.

Thanks guys. I'm quite pleased with it for the most part. It's not perfect by any means, but it looks great and so far, from the little bit that I noodled around on it unplugged, I think that it's going to setup and play very nicely. Looking forward to the wiring and plugging in for the first time. It always feels good the first time you plug in the tuner to see if it works and you see that little needle come alive. Very satisfying indeed.
