I think this was a pretty good comparison actually.. What strings one prefers is very subjective of course, and depends on the bass. Me playing passive J and P basses most of the time, I found this video useful.

I used a nice pair of headphones (Sennheizer 650) and below is my list, #1 being my favorite and #8 least favorite:

1- Ernie Balls
2- Rotosounds
3- DR
4- Fender
5- D'addario
6- Dunlop
7- GHS
8- Cleartone

I like the balance of the lows, mids, and highs best with the Ernie Balls.

I didn't know I'd like the Rotosounds that much. Although the Ernie Balls sounded the best to me, the Rotosounds were very close.

And the DR was close to the Rotosounds, they had a little less mids IMO.

I also thought the Fender would be one of my least favorites, but they actually sounded nice, just lacking a little lows.

The D'addario and the Dunlop sounded very close, I found the former a little more lively.

I'm very surprised about the GHS being near the end of the list as people rave about them so much. They were too boomy for my taste (I guess 'boomers' is a good choice of name).

The Cleartones were not clear at all, they sounded very dull to me and the worst of all.

When I bought my Ultra Precision that came with 7250M my thoughts were what strings I would replace them with. But the overall sound was excellent with Fenders on Bass; so I kept them on. After breakin they were great. Kept them 10 months stayed in tune and intonation never budged and still sounded fine [just a tad dull] before I changed just 2 weeks ago to Markbass Ultimate 45-105 [I have been willing lately to be Guinea Pig hence Bass and strings] Bass has been a winner will see with strings soon [so far smoother feel, warmer tone out of package]

If Markbass don't work for me I will buy another set of 7250's; Reasonable price, great mid's no scoop[I can do that myself when needed] nice tension, seem to last

I listen with my eyes closed. Rotosound was my #1. Did not expect that.

EB was my favorite (which really surprised me, since I hate their guitar strings). Next DR, and then Rotosound.
Fender, Addario and Dunlop, nothing to really write home about it.
Head to head as worse of the bunch, GHS and Cleartone.

Great video, since I'm shopping for some strings for a Danelectro Longhorn I just bought.
I'll look into some Ernie Ball short scale...

They all* sound good finger style and slap style, yet the Fenders have more character. I'll definitely give then a try.

It's worth bearing in mind some of the sets are stainless steel and others nickel-plated steel. Explains the tonal differences.

I hate how much I like 7250L

All the money spent trying other strings and they are good enough. Neutral enough to work for what I need. The hamburger of strings, and I love hamburgers.
