A question for effects users and non-users...

Well, don't get all in a twist, maybe it's not you we're talking about? Constructive posts that explain how to get a sound without an effect is very different from the people who tend to jump into an effects discussion or question and all they say are non-contributing things like "I've played X years and never used an effect, the tone is in my fingers".

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think its to gloat/try and show off. They want to make sure us effects users know that they are superior to us because all they need is an amp, bass and their fingers. I'm sure some, SOME, drop a comment to possibly engage in a healthy debate. But most just want to try and make it look like they are some bad a** that doesnt need effects. I tend to ignore posts like that most times. But every now and then someone says something that, in my eyes, makes them look like a pretentious jerk.

It helps to keep ones expectations realistic when engaged in an internet discussion. People are jerks, and the relative anonymity that accompanies the medium where these discussions occur can turn otherwise harmless, productive members of society into raging, nonsensical and raving jackwagons.

In other words, haters gonna hate, trolls gonna troll, and jerkoffs are going to come sauntering into the effects forum and proudly proclaim that they don't need effects and to hell with any poseurs that think they do. Think of it as another extension of the "Greater Internet F***wad Theory."

I can see how this can apply to some. But for the guys like me that are on here all the time and comment just as much on various topics, I would like think we care about our rep. I know I do. Don't get me wrong, I've been known to spout nonsense and or silly/stupid things, but I always try to be respectful and not sound like a totally arrogant pr**k. Still, I guess I don't see the guys that post what this thread is about a lot in the threads I visit most. Which is the effects forum. I still hear what ya sayin.

Boredom, and/or post count?

People that like to debate are attempting to win an argument, eh? Maybe some thrive on arguments, maybe not. I've met several people that seem to thrive on creating chaos.

I have daily conversations with a non-musician that is very cynical, and sarcastic. He's not a mean guy-he simply emulates that behavior like a hobby, or personality type.

My hope is if I go there and say "I don't use effects." someone will ask me "why not?" To which I would answer "...because I'm very poor and cannot afford them" which should prompt most of the effects users to take pity and ship a large portion of their un-used surplus toys to me.

But that never happens. Instead, people just get angry and call me a troll and make me feel bad about myself.

I know it's not a very good plan, but I don't want to come across as begging, or very intelligent in the first place.

I think if you say "I don't need an effect unit to make that sound, here's how I do it" that's different from someone who just says "I don't need effects for my tone." in a thread clearly asking people what effects they use. That's just being a jerkoff (not the first term I'd use...).

And it isn't just effects. It's all over the place. "Who bought/tried out X bass because their favorite player uses one and you think they sound great?" answered with "I'd never buy an instrument just because someone else uses it. I find my own tone." and they completely ignored the second part of "and you think they sound great."

There's just this huge holier than thou arrogance among musicians that the internet just makes worse than it already was. At least when it happens in real life, the two of you can bust out into a Crossroads-style duel to shame the other into becoming scare lol...

I hope that last bit makes people realise I am not 100% super serious here. This is the internet, there are more "trolls" and there are more jerks, because people can hide behind their computer. That's just the way it is. I admit that I've had to catch myself before quoting them and responding snarkily, too, but in the end I just try and ignore it, because the same mentality of making that post in the first place means that it won't go away, either.

**edit** lol Nev375. I may have an overdrive or delay kicking around somewhere, would you like them? ;)

This is a valid answer. If someone goes into an effects thread and says "I don't use effects, but I can get this sound by doing bass tweak/amp tweak/technique tweak. Give that a shot", I don't think any of us would have a problem with that. It's the posts that just say "I've been playing bass since Leo Fender invented the damn thing and I've never used a single effect in my life!", and then just leave it at that, never bothering to add anything remotely helpful to whatever discussion they jumped into. I know it's much like the "slap haters" going into every slap thread or the "round wound haters" in the String section or the "solid-state haters" in Amps or the ever-popular "fingers vs pick".

If someone has a relevant and helpful suggestion, by all means, toss it out. But, if all someone wants to do is rail on pick players, who use solid state amps, while stringing their active basses with round wound strings and slapping some times through their effects pedalboard, do us all a small favor and just head to a thread that makes you happy...

I agree that it is not limited to the effects forum. There are a bunch of jerks in a lot of sub forums here that spout the same recycled BS all the time. "I don't need more than one pickup", "I don't need a pick", "Tubes or nothing", "I can only play on an ebony fingerboard", "anybody using anything other than 15 inch speakers is a m0r0n", You can't play without a Low B".

However, I'll say this. The effects sub is different. People seem to go out of their way sometimes to say they don't use effects. I see it more than anything else so I don't agree 100% that it is just splash page invaders. I mean, can we all say with a straight face that there as many "low b sucks" posts in 5 String bass threads as there are "I only need my fingers" posts on effects threads?

I'll say this about the effects thread: There were a few discussions about Tube vs SS amps recently in the effects section and every single post was constructive, watts were discussed intelligently, tone was discussed intelligently, people who owned SS amps recommended Tube amps, people who own tube amps recommended SS amps. Honestly, when is the last time that happened on TB outside of the effects section?

nshuman reminded me, there was a fantastic troll character a few months ago, where a guy posting with a Michael Angelo Battio avatar joined up to complain about loud and adventurous bassists. I wish that guy would post every day because it would be refreshing to see the guitard point of view on many topics.
