Any serious attempt I would make to answer this question would belong in the Lobby.
Conciousnesss is cultural. Certain arctic tribes had up to 15 words for white. Certain African tribes had no word or concept for green.

I read some version of the Bhagavad Gita.
Arjuna asked good questions.
The one question I would have loved for him to ask..."Lord Krishna, why is your skin blue?".
Neither. Reality exists apart from consciousness. This is an example of humanity thinking it's special. Reality is reality. Consciousness is chemical.
I can do no better than to quote Max Planck, who thought about such things more than most:

the most intriguing character is karan or karna.. the first born, the discarded. check out the bhagvad gita books by "bibek debroy".
anytime nuke baba.. or maybe i'm mixing it up with shiva's story.. anyway every god in the indian mythology is an incarnation of brahma, vishnu or shiva (creator, preserver,destroyer) the same as the fates

I figure consciousness is a function of a physical brain. One clue that this might be the case is that consciousness can be affected by injuries to the brain.
