A really interesting blues bassline - Cryin' - by Eric Clapton

This is a bit of a hidden gem. Not a very well known song and hard to find recordings of. But one of my favorite basslines.

There's a lot to like about this. My favorite part is the nearly chromatic descending scale used. Instead of simply playing the root of the chord, each successive note in that part of the bassline occupies a different function in the chord as the song changes. Does anyone know of other songs/basslines that use this technique?

Also interesting:

* 8-bar blues
* The bass has a driving, funky rhythm that's in direct contradiction to the guitar and mournful lyrics
* Works really well with the drums

I wouldn’t call it funky.

I refuse to have anything to do with Spotify, so I pulled this up on YT…


The tune is basically a re-write of Big Bill Broonzy’s “Key To The Highway”…

…and the bass, in a shuffle rhythm, hits the root of the I chord, but then the major third of the following V and IV chords.
I’ve heard that move in this rock song…

Possibly in the intro to this, depending on how you voice the chords…

My choice of YT was strictly for reference(and demonstration); any music that I enjoy I own physical copies of, and that part of Clapton’s career I couldn’t care less about, so I can’t say that I’ve ever heard it. Unless you can tell me different, Spotify screws the artist worse, as far as I know.
