a recent potential deal that fell through over nothing...

this one bugs me.

-I find a bass that is about five hours away; the guy has it advertised on a site (not CL). I contact him and we talk on the phone. twice. I was prepared to make the drive; he says his son will be bringing it down to where I live in about ten days' time-even better.

he says it was bought new, played once, and put in the case. essentially new. full documentation. the price was more than right.

i'm really excited and figure I cant go wrong on this one.

I get a call on Monday night from the son (right on schedule), I could sense hesitation in his voice right away. we planned to meet the following day; I said "I have the cash in my cupboard". he goes on to say he wanted us to go to my bank and pull out fresh money. this will be a bit out of both of our way but he said fine and I (irritated) said ok as well. I reassured him that I was a straight up and honest guy to ease his mind.
I realized that it sounded like we were doing the deal in a neutral place (think parking lot); I told him I needed to try it out first; he said he never even thought about that. after some talk, he agreed to meet at his house (I offered my house) right after work the next day.
five minutes later he texts me back and says the transaction is delayed for a month until his dad can come down and deal with it. I already waited 10 days.
I told them both to pound sand.

for the life of me, I don't know why they were so paranoid-I mean...they are selling and I want to buy-real simple. doesn't get easier. I agreed to whatever their terms were. the fact that they brought the bass down here shows the willingness to sell. makes no sense.

it pisses me off that this one slipped away but I refuse to allow people to string you along while you kiss their butt just to get something. I refuse to give people that much power over me.

you would think that a local face to face deal would be easier, but IME-dealing on TB is far superior to this kind of crap. I think part of the reason buying/selling on here is better is that you cant flake out of an agreement once the funds are exchanged-a deal is generally a deal.

I totally get not coming to a strangers house or allowing a stranger in yours.

In my opinion that is not over nothing. Reading the title of the thread I figured they cancelled on you. You cancelled the deal.

No offense meant. Just my $.02.
like I said-I offered to meet at my house.
meeting in a neutral place is no guarantee of safety; a person could easily follow the person to his house afterwards. there is always risk on both sides.

wouldn't take
Redflag/ulterior motive to me when he insists that you both go to your bank machine and pullout "fresh money".

Possibly a setup for something further...
wouldn't take a certified cheque either.

for what its worth-
the Canadian dollar is one of the hardest currencies in the world to counterfeit; there are so many safeguards it is ridiculous-anyone in Canada knows this so it seems weird to me.
our money even smells like maple syrup; people always smell their money up here.

First off, sorry the deal fell through. I know that can be frustrating. But I do understand some hesitance with going to a private residence or having you come to his. There have been a couple instances I know if recently in my neck of the woods where Craigslist deals were nothing more than a setup for a robbery. In one instance a poor SOB even got killed.
As far as the bank thing, playing devil's advocate here, but he could have also wanted to make sure he was getting "real" money and the best way to do that is to see it come out of an ATM or bank envelope.

It's a tough world out there. Too bad everyone has to be so suspicious to the point of scotching a good deal.

I have met people before at a guitar center. This gives you a public place where you can also try stuff out.

The son flaked, because he didn't want to field your questions as you're trying it out.
He dropped all responsibility back to the dad, which is typical these days.

This. The son knows nothing about basses and everybody under 30 has been reared to be scared to death so most are.

It could be that something spooked the kid and he nixed the meeting. Better safe than sorry from his perspective. He deferred the deal back to his dad and you nixed the deal completely. You should have been patient. There are all kinds of screwed up people out there. Maybe he wasn't confident that you were legit.

I once traded a new Gibson SG Standard to a nice older gentlemen, for both a Gibson SG faded & a Gibson Flying V faded.

He was in his 70's & his dad, his mid 90's I believe. They lived on a farm in a small town. After about 25 minutes of chatting & jamming he said, " alright, you seem like a nice guy, I'll show you some cool stuff. He proceeded to pull out old stratocasters & Les Paul's & all kinds of vintage equipment.

After I left, I shuddered thinking how the guy could have easily been taken advantage of.

I should note the son didn't sound like a young person on the phone.
whether its a deal on TB or on CL or whatever, I always have a phone call first because you can determine a lot by how the conversation goes. I always want to put people at ease in this first step of making a deal.

I don't think it was me; I think they were just paranoid folks.

I suppose if I had waited I could still make it happen but I guess out of spite I won't.

like many have said-maybe I was the potential sucker.

It sounds like the dad was just trying to control the transaction from afar and the son got cold feet. He probably didn't want to do it to begin with, then when you started requesting to try it and to meet at your place, he just said, "screw it. Dad can do this himself".
I don't think the guy was a musician because it never occurred to him that I would plug it into an amp. I think its tacky to meet at a music store and many places do not allow you to do it.

Fresh Money? What was wrong with the money you already had in the cupboard? Was it past the "sell by date"???
I knew right away that something was off with the guy; especially when he was putting all these safeguards in place. too many hoops for something so simple. I understand you gotta be careful, but he insulted me before there was a reason to do so and assumed I was a crook.
its a risk for both parties not just him. I could get a dud or robbed or whatever.
