As an old man, been stringing for 40 years now and I have only recently noticed this....
Strings tend to run out and one day you notice " hey they are getting pretty dull "
or you get the out and out "dead one" where it suddenly seems the sustain is gone.
I have now noticed that when you fret the "E" at the 5th and compare it to the "A"
open, when they are going decrepit - The fretted "E" sounds a LOT duller than the
open "A" (hitting both with the same attack)
When fresh (at least on my basses) they sound very similar in tone.
Has now become my mileage check for when I am wondering "are these done?"
Of course you may like 'em really mellow, maybe for you this means they are now
"broken in"
