A Tale of Two Boards

Maybe. I was really hoping to use a phaser to help get a tone like Dennis Brown's "Promised Land". But with the bass heavy tone I'll be using, the Maxon PH-350 isn't cutting it - which I suspected would be the case. It sounds great, but it's on the subtler side.

The Moog phaser is way too big and I know you've already tried it, but it would handle the octave/fuzz/filter, or DI for something like the aswad tune no problem, and since you already have the MoogLPF on there you'd get envelope phasing as well.

I've actually never tried the Octoplus. How is it blended with the dry and with the 1oct soloed? I love the Mu-Tron for that funky, rubbery tone but I don't want to shell out for one.

I forgot to mention that the Octoplus also has a tone knob in place of a second suboctave, giving it a bit of useable versatility with a bass guitar- for clean blended funk stuff I roll the tone off a bit and it starts to get into OC-2 land, though still not as many upper harmonics as the OC-2; With the tone CCW, it has a great solo'd -1oct; Here's a short clip of the Octoplus, a couple dry notes, and then the OC-2 - this clip was control subject for the recent freqbox clips I posted; Both octavers used by themselves with -1oct solo'd, and the Octo's tone knob full CCW. I may get a couple more clips of the Octoplus vs OC-2 going, but don't hold me to it... I just plugged into the Octo and jammed for a bit- I really do like this pedal and have been debating putting it on my board- it sounds better than the oc2 with the freqbox (marginally..) and I would like to have a smooth octaver pre-LS-2... but that would just be excessive. Anyway, I thought it was a great find for $25, and definitely worth checking it out sometime, even if only casually the next time you happen to come across a cheap one.

When I had my CC, I noticed that it didn't like hot signals or super sub bass (LPF goodness) as it would sound muddy or be pushed into clipping or feedback. I have a Malekko Echo 600B now and will have to see how it fares. I'll report back with my findings. ;)

That was kind of my take on the CC too, though my unit was malfunctioning so I wasn't sure if it's issues with sub bass were part of that problem or just the natural function of the pedal. Please do give a report on the Malekko 600B. It's on my short list. Basically I need a delay that is small, has headroom to work with sub bass and isn't too muddy. Tap tempo would be nice, but not a deal breaker.

You could try a hard chop tremolo like either the Valcoder or the Hummingbird. It would definitely be noticeable (either as pulses or pseudo ring mod weirdness) and neither of hem are very big.

A trem is a definite possibility. Not a traditional dub sound, but I do love it as an effect. I'll have a hard chopping trem on my "utility board" but for the "dub board" I think I might go with the Earthquaker Pulse Maching if I get a trem.

maybe the SMMwH's filter could be helpful

Definitely a delay I'd like to check out, but as it stands now it wouldn't fit on my board. Now if I only kept one synth (maybe leaving the Deep Impact but selling the Bass Micro Synth) then I'd have additional room for modulation and/or a fuzz, but we'll see.

No they wont, if you get the right one;)

As for thoughts, I think you are on the right track and should continue with this venture.

Thanks. It is interesting to build a dedicated dub board, because it is largely devoid of modulation which by and large isn't compatible with those sub bass signals. I also originally thought of getting a bigger board with a true bypass looper with 3 or 4 loops until I realized that board will never operate without at least one effect on so there's no real need.

Any suggestion for analog delays?

And I'll probably PM to be sure, but I'm hoping fightthepower would be kind enough to do some Octoplus clips because now my curiosity is piqued.

I think if it's possible you should try out the Subdecay. It's very cutting to the point where I usually have the level down quite a bit, I think it possibley has even louder repeats when the level is cranked, but I'm not sure. It is digital but is sounds fantastic because it has a nice repeat break up that sortof emulates tape and avoids being sterile. It's also quite small, about half an inch wider than a boss pedal. The added bonus is the modulation can be cranked beyond what is normally usable and thus provide warble and movement.

Seems to have tons of headroom to me also.

I sound like a broken record on these boards right now but you should try the Source Tri-Mod Phaser (I want to try the Flanger now as well). I can use it with dub sounds just fine. Here's an awful sample from a spontaneous hip hop track. I'm blending the FX25 (@ 0 sensitivity) with my clean and then running both through the Source Audio. Pretty interesting sound in my opinion.

Thanks for the Octaplus clip ftp. And if you do have time for more, I'd appreciate it. I found a good deal on one so I'm considering it.

If I have a regret about my time with the Moog Phaser it's that I didn't have any other Moogerfoogers to connect it to at the time. Well, technically I had a MuRF but it was on my guitar player's board. But it sounds like the right phaser for the job, and since it's full range I bet it would handle the deep bass fine and still be present. I could fit one on my board but it would mean not having the BMS or another modulation (delay, trem, reverb) as signified by the question mark on my first picture.

Anyway, that setup might look like this, with my soon to be shipped out Ring Mod standing in for the Moog Phaser:

guyatone md2. small footprint. digital delay (not longgg obviously) but has a high cut mod by occtone. PM if you wanna try it Jared. more than happy to help a bass brotha out.

Thanks. I've had an MD3, but not when pushing such a hot, deep signal. I'm curious if it would handle it well. Guyatone's delays are great IMO. Just clean, clear repeats without sounding cold or metallic.

I've been interested in the Echobox for a while. And it has top mounted jacks which would help on my crowded board. Good idea.

Very cool clip with some nice playing. But I have to say I couldn't really notice the phaser.

It's in envelope mode and that's a P-bass with the tone almost all the way down. The FX25 is blended in really subtly. Most of the high end definition is due to the phaser. I'm going to try and make a more extreme clip today.

I dig your small board. A great funk board with all the essentials covered. I did find that the PH-3 cut lows and it has a very digital/plastic sound to it but that works well for funk and synthy combos.

The thing for me is that if I go this route it won't be a little board that connects to another to form a giant board when needed. They'd be completely separate and used for different things all together.

Side question for you (or any other Deep Impact owners): How is the octave down on the AKAI. My dub board is going to be pretty tight with some big pedals and I'm wondering if I can get away with it being my octaver on that board. Then I could move the OC-2 over to my "utility" board and not have to worry about buying a second octaver.

The octave down is HUGE. I'll have to check the settings, but I have a pre-set, synthy octave down (#96 on my DI) which is just massive through a big PA. Lots of subs, very syrup-y, with some synthy sparkle up top. Probably not perfect for dub, more electronica.

Thanks. I was thinking I'd need a dedicated octaver, but it's good to know the DI's octave down works well too. The idea for me would be a Mu-Tron Octave Divider or a clone, but I don't have the board space (or willingness to drop that kind of cash) right now.

Back to the Akai, I'd love to hear what your presets you've got setup. Tonight will be my first chance to play with the Deep Impact and any help getting good tones would be appreciated.

Try a Maxon [i use a AD900], they are really nice and clear, I think Malekko's bright be worth looking into as well. For recording Dub stuff I use a space echo but that isn't something I would gig with for bass alone.

I love the Space Echo, but it's overkill and impractical as I won't be using delay all that often. The Maxon is a brilliant delay, but it's too big to fit on my board unless I removed something, maybe the BMS. But again, if I get a Moog Phaser I wouldn't have room for delay OR the BMS. I'd be okay with losing the Bass Micro Synth to add phaser AND delay, but if it's one or the other I'm not sure.

In other news, looky what I finally got my grubby mitts on:

The seller said good condition but this thing is absolutely mint.

And the board is starting to come together. Two or three more pieces should show up in the next week or so.

Yeah I guess it is a question on how much you use the delay vs phaser vs BMS.

I had the same problem with my board Maxon delay vs moog phaser... the delay won for practical reasons like I already had another phaser on my board and I use delay. Although I have to say the moog is wonderful and if I had it on a live board I'd have to run at least 3 EXP pedals just for the fun of it.

One thing a hard chop trem can do is pseudo-delay, but without any mud, because of course there are no actual repeats, and if you're not worried about tap tempo...

Just more things for you to think about.

Matt.

Agreed...I've got what I think is a pretty awesome octaver sound on my DI. It's been a while since I've monkeyed with it, but I'm pretty sure you can't get just the octave down...you always have a little bit of dry mixed in.

consider the Moog CP251 Control Processor. WIth a small patch cable you can get phasing effects with the Lowpass Filter. You should also look at the Moog MP201 Multi-Pedal. Its absolutely massive, but you can get an LFO to get Phaser effects and also have control of 3 other functions. With the MP201/CP251, I can get some really cool things out of one Moogerfooger. You can use the CP251 LFO to modulate the Lowpass Filter, and control the rate and amount sent to the filter with the MP201, for example.

Just like Lindsay, I'd love to know about some of the patches that you have setup on your DI.

The board you see is what I have to work with. For gigging purposes I don't want to go bigger than that. I considered using my PT Pro and a true bypass strip for different loops etc but then I realized that with this setup I'm never going to have a "clean" tone so what's the point? So I'm sticking with the PT-2.

So while there's a lot of cool stuff you can do with multiple Moogerfoogers and a MP201 or CP251, I don't have the room or the need in this band's music for the vast majority of those sounds.

One day I'll be motivated enough to write down the settings of my fav DI pre-sets...

...but in the meantime here's a clip of my band with a fairly standard DI sound doubling the bass in the intro.

If I get some time on the weekend I'll record some more DI clips for the wiki - the host of most of the existing clips is no longer with us.
