A Tale of Two Boards

One day I'll be motivated enough to write down the settings of my fav DI pre-sets...

...but in the meantime here's a clip of my band with a fairly standard DI sound doubling the bass in the intro.

If I get some time on the weekend I'll record some more DI clips for the wiki - the host of most of the existing clips is no longer with us.

Cool DI sound, and even better playing. I really dig your tone. Thanks for that clip.

Am I the only one who's getting freaked out by all the John Turners?

Join us. Resistance is futile.

That is some seriously funked-up spiff. Thanks for posting.

Here's the Octoplus clip-- there are a few nasty clips in places... didn't hear it in Ableton or Itunes.. but its there on the soundclick at least, and it takes so long to upload with their form that constantly crashes and says 'blocked ID, please return to soundclick' etc etc, so im not going to change it lol..

Funkay! I'm liking that big time! Gonna have to see how close I can get to that kind of tone with my OS. :)

P-to-the-M

Thank you sir. And there may be a similar PM headed back your way soon. I'm finding some cool settings.

One last question for my dub board. I'm trying to decide whether I want the last pedal to be a flanger or a reverb.

I found the delay I want but it is big enough that it AND the BMS won't fit. So I'm kicking the EHX off. I've got room for one more MXR/Boss/Maxon sized pedal.

The only phasers deep enough to work with dub tones (Moog, Maestro) are way too big to fit. And I've decided against a number of other modulation types (chorus, tremolo, vibe) as not really being appropriate for our music.

So now I'm deciding between the Maxon FL-9 and the Malekko Spring Chicken. Thoughts?

My thoughts are more focused on what delay you bought

Delays actually. I ordered a TC Electronic Nova Repeater which are currently backordered. Then I realized I couldn't power it with my PP2+. Well, I could (with outlet 5 or 6 with the switch away from normal) but my Moog LPF is already drawing too much power for that to happen. It would have to run on its own AC adapter.

So I ordered the Vox Time Machine. Both are the simplest and smallest tap tempo delays I could find with separate bypass and TT switches. I didn't cancel my Nova order just in case the Vox clips/distorts on me. I figure the higher headroom of the TC Electronic would keep that from happening. But I hope the Vox works out. It's easier to power and is simpler - which I like. And as a minor point I like the looks of it better.

A third option would be to add delay, reverb AND flanger to my board. But to make that happen I'd have to go with a Lovepedal Echo Baby which I'm not sure I want to do.

Octave
Brown Dog

Third insert board for 00Funk's trigger loop
(Low Pass, Ring Mod, pitchfactor, BMS, (flanger), time machine)

00Funk
TremoLo
Nova Repeater
VT Bass
(Reverb)
Headrush

??

You'll have a useful frivolous board and ANOTHER trippy board of awesome.

After all, your latest board rules.

and the brown dog has a clean out.

take the third board out and there's a great second board setup.

Put another board together and insert it between the Chunk pedals.

I don't see how that's particularly out of line.

fightthepower is right that you couldn't set it up that way. If you connect the Brown Dog and 00Funk through the envelope out, you can no longer use the 00Funk individually. It's like a filter with an effects loop but in reverse. Besides, the truth is that at many of the places I play, size is a factor. I could probably get away with a PT-Pro, but ideally I'd like two boards that are PT-2 sized.

And since different gigs require different pedals I really don't want to drag a huge setup full of pedals I don't need to each gig just for the benefit of having a giant, fun board to play with at home.

you can't use the 00funk individually?
Too bad. I can use my EP-1 with its trigger in without my OFO having to be on.

If size is a factor, then I'd have to go for this:

Octave
Brown Dog
00Funk
TremoLo
VT Bass
Nova Repeater

Yeah, the envelope connection on the BD and 00Funk isn't a trigger in - it's just a connection between those two pedals.

If size is a factor, then I'd have to go for this:

Octave
Brown Dog
00Funk
TremoLo
VT Bass
Nova Repeater

Yeah, that's about how my second "utility" board is going to look.

Pitchblack
Octaver - from Robot Factory if I dig it
Brown Dog
00Funk
Maxon PH-350 (or whatever phaser I have at that time)
Empress Tremolo

and three more pedals. Right now two of them are the Boss PS-3 and Akai Headrush but I'm still debating. And my BMS is getting kicked from my dub board so I'll either throw it on that board or sell it.

Alright.

So I've got one space left on my board and am trying to figure out what to fill it with.

Here's what I've already got: Octaver, Blender, Filter, Synth, Overdrive/Distortion, Moog LPF, Delay and Compressor.

The question is what else can I add to my dub board.

I've got space for a Barber LTD or Psilocybe sized pedal or smaller. Normally I'd have a fuzz on my board, but not in this band. I'm looking at modulation but I'm having trouble thinking of/finding a phaser or flanger that would be deep or wet enough to use with my dub tone, I'm worried that reverb will just be too messy and that trem would be out of place.

So I'm not sure. If I had the space, I'd grab a Moog Phaser or Maestro Stage Phaser and call it done, but I don't. So any thoughts? Other effects types I should consider?

A less pedal obsessed player would just leave that spot empty, but that's just not my MO. So give me any ideas you have.
